Job Description:
Purpose of Position: The Public Service Assistant is a civilian unarmed position with no arrest or criminal enforcement powers who performs his/her duties with latitude for independent judgment. This position is responsible for the performance of office and field activities such as augmenting sworn law enforcement deputies with road and beach patrol, non-criminal law enforcement, special calls for service and operational details not requiring a sworn deputy. Such duties include report writing, conducting routine patrol, traffic control and minor crashes, escort details, noise complaints, and executing special administrative assignments as directed by the Sheriff, Division Directors, and PSA Coordinator. Qualifications/Education: High School graduate, Type 25 WPM accurately, Valid Fl Driver's License and be eligible to be covered by the employer's insurance carrier, Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Basic knowledge of general office equipment, Knowledge of geographic location in the county, County Codes, and Florida Statutes. Working Conditions: This position is subject to routine call outs, requires working on weekends, evenings, and holidays, hours are subject to vary and extended hours may be necessary. Works mostly in the field with close personal contact with the public and where exposure to outdoor elements, noisy environment (especially when directing traffic and responding to crash scenes), threat of bodily harm, and/or hazardous conditions and pathogens is foreseeable. Abilities: This position frequently performs such tasks as grasping, bending, reaching above his/her head and/or away from his/her body, lifting and/or carrying items up to 10 lbs., pushing, pulling, squatting, kneeling, and climbing, and occasionally lifting and/or carrying items up to 40 lbs. This position may also be restricted to standing when directing traffic and has to exhibit heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions in avoidance of injury or accidents. Communicates effectively with Agency personnel, various governmental agencies, and the public, on the phone, in person, and in writing while maintaining confidentiality. Effective communication skills: reading, writing and speaking English; listening and hearing. The position requires the ability to operate a telephone, copier, computer (including keyboarding and mouse), and via a radio to enter, retrieve, and duplicate information and is capable of administering basic CPR.
