PUBLIC WORKS ASSISTANTThe City of Long Grove, IA

The City of Long Grove is now accepting applications for a full time Public Works Assistant.

Experience with municipal water, wastewater, electrical, street maintenance, and/or building code enforcement is preferred. Applicant will be required to obtain job-related certifications within one year of start date. Includes benefits. Pay negotiable and dependent upon qualifications.

JOB SUMMARY:

Under direction of the Public Works Director, City Clerk, City Council, and Mayor, this position is responsible for a variety of City Maintenance Tasks, including but not limited to Building Inspection, Code Enforcement, Plan and Zoning, Water Operations, Sewer Operations, Park Maintenance, Street Maintenance, and Building Maintenance

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this position and are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Administers the permitting, inspections and occupancy of construction activities within the City in a timely manner.
  • Explains, interprets, and provides guidance regarding all applicable codes to architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and other interested parties.
  • Proactively advises customers, when possible, to advise them of technical issues and problems.
  • Enforces a variety of codes, including the City Building Code and the Code of Ordinances.
  • Provides technical assistance to the City Council, Plan and Zone, Board of Adjustments, and the general public.
  • Reviews, investigates, and responds to nuisance complaints.
  • Sidewalk inspections, street light repair
  • Assist with yard waste pick up, debris pick up, tree trimming, mowing
  • Water meter readings, disconnects, and re-connects
  • Monitor and record water plant and waste station meter readings, press sludge
  • Perform water quality test procedures as required by DNR.
  • Monitor water plant and waste water plant equipment for proper operation and cleanliness.
  • Vehicle maintenance and repairs
  • Minor maintenance and upkeep of City Buildings as assigned.
  • Respond to and take corrective action to water plant and waste station system alarms
  • Take weekend city emergency calls on alternate weekends.
  • Attend all required safety, instructional, and professional development classes.
  • Clocks in and out of work utilizing the City's mobile time-tracking software
  • Maintains a neat and professional work area.
  • Maintains City's image at all times by being courteous and professional.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education

  • High school graduate

Licensure:

  • Bondable
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License & ability to obtain (Type B CDL) within 24 months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Electrical Inspection Certification within 12 months of hire
  • Ability to obtain additional certifications including, but not limited to: Plan Review, Plumbing, Mechanical

Skills/Abilities:

Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to interact appropriately and perform basic building, grounds, and utility maintenance for government business. Ability to organize work, exercise good judgement, maintain good interpersonal relationships and adapt to change. Ability to communicate clearly, write and print legibly, and use appropriate grammar and spelling. Basic experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

(Includes but not limited to:)

  • Associate's degree
  • Previous experience working in building code enforcement
  • Previous experience working for government entity
  • Inspection certifications
  • Iowa Level 2 Waste Water Certification

MENTAL COGNITIVE SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to interact appropriately and utilize various Microsoft Office Applications: Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to organize work, exercise good judgement, maintain good interpersonal relationships and adapt to change.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, write and print legibly and use appropriate grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Maintain contact with other agencies and departments and answer inquiries from customers.
  • Understands and follows oral and written instructions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Includes but not limited to:

Constant: Visual Acuity, hearing, standing, walking, driving, talking, pushing, pulling, sittings, grasping, feeling, reaching, stooping, climbing, lifting objects up to 10 pounds.

Frequent: Lifting objects 10-25 pounds, bending, kneeling and crouching, sitting and/or standing for periods greater than 15 minutes, exposure to heat/cold/noise/mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, oils, confined spaces, darkness or poorly lit areas.

Occasional: Lifting objects 25-40 pounds or more.

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES USED:

Includes but not limited to:

Pickup truck, Class 7 dump truck with plow, backhoe/loader, power riding lawn mower, gator, weed eater, chainsaw, basic power and hand tools. Hardhat, safety glasses, boots, gloves, ear protection.
