Come join our Public Works Team as a Maintenance Worker. The work isn't easy and is often challenging, but at the end of the day you will know you are a part of something bigger than yourself. Under general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, performs skilled operations of light duty equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of City streets, sidewalks, driveways, signage, curbs, and gutters along with other forms of storm drainage systems. Streets and drainage work includes striping streets, repairing asphalt, pouring and finishing concrete, removing debris from grates, inlets, and culverts. Employees in this class provide support in other Public Works functions, such as maintenance of City right of ways, clearing, collection and/or removal of trash, debris, brush, and special events as needed. Performs related work as directed. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operates various types of equipment, i.e., striping machine, tractors and shredders, sweepers, rollers, skid steers, dump trucks, water trucks, in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, sidewalks, and drainage systems.
  • Repairs streets and related areas, i.e., damaged sidewalks, due to striping, potholes, utility cuts, and City construction activities.
  • Maintains City streets, right of ways, and drainage systems to include cleaning debris from grates, inlets, and culverts, mowing, trimming overgrowth; installing, replacing, and repairing signage, and repairing damaged sidewalks by operating various types of hand-held, manual, gas or electrically powered tools such as push mower, weed eater, chain saw, etc.
  • Maintains records concerning work orders, vehicle and equipment maintenance, inventory, etc.
  • Under guidance of Public Works Crew Leader and/or Public Works Superintendent and/or Director of Public Works, ensures proper placement of traffic control devices, signs, and caution indicators per work site.
  • Attends required safety meetings in accordance with department policy.
  • Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees and the public.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential. Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides support to other Public Works functions as needed such as special events.
  • May operate light duty equipment upon demonstrating essential skill levels for safe and effective operation of assigned equipment.
  • Performs related work as directed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, night callouts, and overtime as needed for meetings, special events, or during emergency situations as required.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations as required by the City Manager.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned works hours is essential. Leave scheduled should be managed so as to not interfere with ability to accomplish tasks, including special projects and projects with deadlines.
Training and Experience Guidelines
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of work experience that demonstrates the ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of light duty equipment associated with streets maintenance.
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses and Certificates
  • Valid Texas Class C or higher driver license must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to comprehend and retain knowledge of the practices and materials utilized in the installation, maintenance, and restoration and repair of streets and drainage systems.
  • Considerable working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Working knowledge of safe and effective operation of light duty equipment and hand-held gas, diesel, or electrically powered tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, roadways, right of ways and drainage systems.
  • Ability to understand and receive both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow personnel, and outside departments and agencies with which the position interacts.

Age Requirement Must be 18 years of age. Physical and Sensory Requirements include but are not limited to:
  • Some tasks involve frequent walking, standing; some lifting and carrying of moderate weight (12-20 pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, shop, or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe/productive operations.
  • Some tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough/uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting/carrying heavy (20-50 pounds) items and occasionally heavier (100 pounds +) items.
  • Some tasks involve the frequent use of coordination and manipulative skills in performing a variety of tasks with the full range of hand and power tools and shop equipment; or the skilled and complex operation of equipment calling for adherence to exacting standards of depth, grade, dimensions, and contours.
  • Some tasks may require oral communications ability.
