The City of Berkeley is seeking a Solid Waste Operations Manager (Classification: Public Works Operations Manager) to oversee solid waste and recycling programs, collection, and Transfer Station operations within the Zero Waste Division of Public Works. This leader will drive the continued success of Berkeley's comprehensive Zero Waste Management programs, ensuring sustainable practices, operational efficiency, and exceptional customer service for residents and businesses. They will oversee three direct reports and 110 total staff, and will contribute to the management of the $50 million Division budget. The ideal candidate is a highly experienced leader in waste management, with a strong understanding of collection operations and workplace safety. They will also have experience motivating and leading teams, managing budgets, and navigating complex union environments. Their strategic oversight will directly impact the City's environmental sustainability efforts, including compliance with regulations such as SB 1383, the rebuilding of the city's Transfer Station, and the launch of Berkeley's ambitious 10-year Zero Waste Management Plan. A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to the possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, engineering, business or public administration, or a closely related field and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the management of public works field operations and maintenance and/or zero waste management; with three (3) years of supervisory experience. Additional qualifying supervisory experience or advanced related program planning may be substituted for the required education on a year-per-year basis.
Other requirements include being able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
