Salary: $21.03 - $31.45 Hourly Location : Hobbs, NM Job Type: Full Time NonExempt Job Number: 202400973 Department: UTILITIES Opening Date: 10/03/2024 Description Performs a variety of duties associated with the delivery of safe drinking water to the public. Duties include standard and emergency repairs of mechanical and electrical equipment necessary to pump, regulate, measure, and assure the proper operation of water supply pump stations, water booster stations, pressure reducer devices, wastewater lift stations and/or retention facilities located throughout the city. Essential Duties
  • Ensures adequate water pressure and volume for fire protection.
  • Operates pumps and valves to control and adjust flow and treatment process.
  • Repairs or replaces gauges, flow meters, pumps, valves, filters, pipes, motors, and other controls and equipment as necessary.
  • Performs chemical treatment of water sources to well systems.
  • Inspects wells and reservoirs, reads meters and checks for leaks.
  • Cleans and checks oil levels in motors, greases meters and packing glands and/or replaces packing. Dumps sand traps.
  • Monitors emergency generators.
  • Makes changes to computer controls of water system (SCADA), booster pumps, tower water levels, and various set points to regulate water levels.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs plumbing problems that may arise.
  • Records data concerning pumping operations such as generator logs and daily activity logs.
  • Composes production and water level reports as required.
  • Gathers water samples for chlorine residuals and bacteriological sampling as required; sends to lab to be tested and analyzed.
  • Monitors water quality in distribution lines and inspects reservoirs for cleanliness and breakages.
  • Performs cutting torch, minor welding repairs and fabrications.
  • Performs housekeeping and grounds keeping to all work areas.
  • Conducts on-call duties as assigned performing emergency repairs after normal duty hours, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications This position is subject to the City of Hobbs' Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following: pre-employment testing, post accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required with one-year experience in pump and motor maintenance preferred. Pump Operator Uncertified -Hiring Range $21.03-$24.18 Pump Operator I -Hiring Range $22.08-$25.38 Pump Operator II -Hiring Range $23.19-$26.67 Pump Operator III -Hiring Range $24.34-$27.99 Pump Operator IV- Hiring Range $27.35-$31.45 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Skill in mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
  • Knowledge of Municipal water services.
  • Ability to diagnose problems at pump stations and well sites and correct problem.
  • Ability to read and understand data on charts, meters, graphs, gauges and computer data.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to become computer literate.
  • Ability to work after hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to meet ultimate prescribed certification level as per the certification and training policy.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Utility Personnel, Parks and Recreation personnel, Electricians and general public.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid state issued drivers license required.

  • The City of Hobbs will provide 80% to 90% Heath Insurance Coverage from Single to Family coverage.
  • Employees are eligible for 100% short-term disability coverage provided by the City of Hobbs.
  • Employer PERA contributions 14.8% for general, 28.775% for HPD, 30.9% for HFD.
  • CDL pay - $6,000 per year (if applicable).
  • PTO accruals start at 12 hours per month (144 hours per year) and progressively increase based on years of service to 20 hours per month (240 hours per year) at year 21.
  • Bilingual Pay - $1,500 dollar incentive per year upon completion of yearly proficiency test.
  • Education Incentive - ($1,000, $4,000, $6,000 dollars - Associates, Bachelor's, Masters; degree must be relevant to position and above the current minimum requirements of the held position).
  • Longevity Pay - Begins at the completion of 10 years of service. Gradually increased.
  • Retention Incentive - $600 incentive yearly with years 1-9 of completed service
  • 13 Paid Holidays.
  • Bereavement Leave - 5 days per calendar year per personnel rules guidelines.
  • Military Leave - (120 hours per year for general, 183.75 per year for HPD, 360 hours per year for HFD).
