POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

THE ROLE:

The Qualified Craft Worker will spend most of the time performing highly skilled plumbing/steamfitting tasks involving the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of various interior and exterior plumbing related building components including, but not limited to:

+ Domestic, sanitary, and drainage utilities, and garage floor drainage systems

+ Fixtures and water heaters

+ Line snaking/jetting, well water systems, oil/water and wastewater holding equipment, natural gas supply lines, pneumatic compressors, and associated plumbing

+ Diagnosing/troubleshooting and resolving plumbing problems typical to commercial and industrial buildings

The incumbent must be dependable and self-motivated since they will often be working independently, however, work with other trades as required in the repair and maintenance of HVAC and fuel dispensing equipment. The ability to multi-task and to take initiative in completing their duties with minimum supervision is necessary. The incumbent must be dependable and self-motivated since they will often be working independently.

*A considerable amount of driving is involved and the individual filling this position is required to maintain a valid Connecticut driver's license.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of plumbing and steamfitting equipment and systems.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

+ Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard plumbing and steamfitting trade practices and codes;

+ Assembles, installs and repairs air, gas, water, steam and sewer disposal systems;

+ Cuts, bends, reams and threads pipes;

+ Caulks and tests joints;

+ Installs and repairs gas, water, steam and sanitary fixtures;

+ Covers and insulates tanks, pipes and related objects;

+ Works with high pressure hot water and steam systems;

+ Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks;

+ Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers;

+ Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;

+ Keeps necessary records;

+ May braze pipes;

+ May inspect and repair steam traps and/or vaults fed by main system at various locations;

+ May remove pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods;

+ May inspect and repair medical gas systems;

+ May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required;

+ May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;

+ May operate heavy equipment;

+ May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports;

+ Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

+ Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard plumbing and steamfitting trade practices;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled plumbing and steamfitting trades.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

+ Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.

+ At the University of Connecticut: Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management.

+ At other state agencies: Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.

+ Experience performing technical duties within the plumbing and steamfitting trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

+ Possession of a valid CT plumbing and/or trade-related license

+ Experience with CT plumbing and relative building and safety codes, including lock-out/tag-out procedures and Call Before You Dig permitting

+ Experience reading and performing work as detailed in architectural, manufacturer, and engineering drawings and specifications

+ Experience providing drawings and specifications sufficient for working with other trades

+ Experience in the operation and maintenance of building automation systems sufficient to access, troubleshoot, and repair them

+ Experience with well systems and sewage lift stations

+ Experience with Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Excel, and Word

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

+ University of Connecticut: Incumbents in this class are required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut plumbing and pipefitting license.

+ Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

+ Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.

+ A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

+ Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions.

+ The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
