Qualified Representative, Westminster Tax Clinic
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Qualified Representative supports the Director with student-run, experiential learning accounting programs that serve low-to-moderate income families throughout the state of Utah and beyond. As an integral part of the Westminster LITC, this position reports to the Director and is responsible for providing analysis of potential cases; assisting in representation of the Clinic's clients before the IRS and U.S. Tax Court; and contributing to the success of the Clinic by supporting its duties under the LITC grant.
This position may be filled as a Full Time or Part Time position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Support student-volunteer recruitment activities for the WTC.
* Assist the Director with training the program participants.
* Provide analysis of potential LITC cases.
* Assist in representation of the Clinic's clients before the IRS and U.S. Tax Court.
* Assist in timely filing of required reports with appropriate agencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* JD degree with a minimum of four years of directly related experience, or an LLM in taxation with a minimum of two years of directly related experience.
* Licensed to practice law by and in good standing with the Utah State Bar, U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Strong research skills.
* Four years of related experience representing clients before the U.S. Tax Court, in IRS exams and appeals, and in negotiating collection alternatives with the IRS - including offers in compromise.
* Familiarity with the LITC grant program and its requirements.
* Excellent interpersonal skills.
* Sensitive to cultural diversity and varying socio-economic backgrounds.
* Ability to work flexible hours before, during, and after the tax season, including evenings and weekends.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bilingual proficiency (Spanish and/or ASL is preferred).
* Familiarity with US federal district and bankruptcy court procedure.
* Experience representing clients with state and local tax authorities.
