Working in a fast-paced, shop environment, Mechanics must work well in teams to provide safe and effective railcar inspection, repair, and maintenance. maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and willingness to develop in the operation.Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform repair, maintenance, and inspections on tank cars and other repairs such as; placard holders. Light paint touch - up, reflectorizing and stenciling.
- Complete the repair and application of all associated piping and valves, guards, shrouds, and covers
- Perform any cutting, burning, welding, grinding, soldiering, and brazing associated with the removal or application of components
- Ensure all work associated with rush repairs, road work, and supplementary service operation equipment is completed quickly and efficiently
- Perform all preventative maintenance work and repairs on trucks, underframe, structure, safety appliances, braking systems, and draft systems
- Promptly address and report all safety concerns and equipment problems to the site designate
- Complete daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary
- Exert best effort to protect human life, human safety and company property
- Participate in company developed training program for freight car mechanics
Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
- Possess a good mechanical aptitude and knowledge of railcar components
- Use hand tools and other equipment effectively and without injury
- Be physically fit including the ability to pull self-up and down from railcars on a continuous basis and lift and carry 50 lbs; ability to work in confined spaces and at heights with appropriate restraints
- Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions in a 24/7 work rotation
- Ability to read and write general documentation; learn and use new technology
- Be able to hold and maintain clear drug and alcohol testing
- Willing to be on call
Education & Experience
- Hold and maintain a valid class 5 driver's and forklift license; class 3 with air would be considered an asset
- Railway background with welding experience preferred
- Experience operating various types of equipment an asset
- Railcar Mechanic accreditation considered an asset
