Summary About the Position: 596th Transportation Brigade provides surface deployment and distribution services from Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point, Military Ocean Terminal Concord, the West Coast and Alaska, in order to project combat power and lethality and meet our nation's strategic objectives. Responsibilities Perform maintenance and repair work on standard gauge railroad tracks and ties Install, remove, space and taper railroad ties Install and adjust mechanical flanges, oilers, spring switches, and equipment Repair timber trestles and railroad bridges Maintain railroad beds by cutting, filling, and removing debris and obstructions Repair automatic highway crossing signals Complete a variety of routine and recurring railroad track repairs and preventive maintenance services Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) at the WG-04 level: Ability to do the work of a(n) Railroad Repairer~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform skills operating power tools such as: grinder, saw, wrenches, drill, and hand tools. I can use heavy tools such as axes, picks, chain saws, sledge hammers and tamping bars. I can operate and perform maintenance on power equipment such as chainsaws and weed eaters. I can cut weeds, remove obstructions and debris from drainage ditches. I have experience following general instructions and drawings to perform tasks that require significant manual skill, prior work experience/training and very heavy physical effort. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) at WG-3546-5 level: Ability to do the work of a Railroad Repairer ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform a range of railroad repair duties. I can repair and replace worn railroad rails, angle bars, frogs, tongues & mate switches, cross and switch ties. Installs, removes, spaces & tapers railroad ties. I can use a range of railroad repair tools (e.g., claw bar, tamping bar, wrenching bar, crow bar, lining bar, track chisel, hand file, hand operated rail drill, wrenches, rail tongs, tie tongs and track punch). - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Management may select at any of the grade levels announced. This recruitment provides promotion opportunity to the target grade of the position without further competition when selectee is eligible and recommended by management. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Dexterity and Safety Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean and in order) Physical Effort: Performs extremely strenuous work for long periods. Frequently lifts and carries tools and equipment weighing over 80 pounds or exerts comparable effort in moving and positioning railroad track components. Work involves frequent or continuous bending,reaching, pushing, kneeling, lifting, and similar body and limb movements. Working Conditions: Repairers work outside, often in seasonal temperature and weather extremes and are subject to loud noises, possible burns,fumes from insect sprays, and smoke; dirt, cuts, and grease or oil; insect bites; and possible injuries from handling equipment.May be required to wear protective gloves, hard-toe shoes, safety glasses, and similar protective devices. Any unusual environmental working condition that may arise will be compensated for under an appropriate category of the environmental pay regulation. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
