Overview:

The Reading/Learning Specialist is a full-time (100%) academic year position ( grant-funded by the Federal TRIO Student Support Services Program. Student Support Services (SSS) provides academic support for low income, first-generation students and individuals who experience disability at USU. The Reading/Learning Specialist meets one-on-one with students in academic support coaching capacities as well as teaches classes on college success strategies and study skills, college reading,and personal productivity. The current SSS grant award is for 2021-2026, and the program is funded on an annual basis contingent upon continued federal funding and program performance. The SSS grant has been continuously funded on USU campus for 30+ years. Working hours are M-F 8-5 for 9 months in the academic year.

This position's salary range is $37,500 - 40,000 for the 9 month position, which is equivalent to $50,000 - $53,333 for a 12 month position. The position will be hired commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits.

Responsibilities:

Instruction 50%

  • Each semester teaches and develops one section of USU 1730 (Habits for Academic Success, three credits), and one section of each of two 1-credit courses: USU 1020 (Personal Productivity) and USU 1060 (Reading College Texts).
  • Create a learning community in the classroom that connects students to each other and to the TRIO Student Support Services program.
  • Provide students with opportunities to practice skills and strategies discussed in class.
  • Conduct independent workshops related to study skills.
  • Integrate specific TRIO grant programming into the course experience.

Individual Academic Coaching Support and Consultation 40%

  • Work with and students on an individual basis during regular meetings with staff.
  • As needed, assist program participants individually to improve reading and academic skills.
  • Assess academic needs of students using learning-inventory results.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching with students to improve study skills and behaviors, address non-cognitive success factors, and refer students to appropriate program and institutional services.
  • Guide students through accessing the Canvas software program.

Additional Duties 10%

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of TRIO Student Support Services program activities, working in close collaboration with other staff members.
  • Perform other professional duties as assigned by the SSS program director that contribute to the development and implementation of overall program goals and objectives.
  • Attendance and participation in formal and informal staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional development opportunities is expected.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in the fields of reading, English, or a related field.
  • 1 year's (or more) teaching experience that involved study skills and/or reading skills.
  • Be qualified and approved by Office of Academic Belonging and Learning Excellence to teach USU 1730 (Habits for Academic Success), USU 1020 (Personal Productivity), and USU 1060 (Reading College Texts).
  • Experience working with low-income, disabled, first-generation college students or similar populations.
  • Demonstrated skills in empowering students in their attitudes and academic skills.
  • Experience working as a team member in promoting the interests and capabilities of students
  • Experience developing and delivering instructional materials, workshops, and/or training sessions.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with USU campus resources, Canvas and Banner.
  • Experience working with disadvantaged and low-income students.
  • Persons who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting students in SSS target populations.
  • Spanish language skills.
