The City of Oxnard's Cultural and Community Services Department is seeking Recreation Aides to join our team!Under general supervision, the Recreation Aide I/II provides on-site and tour supervision and/or instruction for programs and special events, and support for a variety of programs and activities in the areas of sports, cultural arts, interpretive and adaptive services, and other related parks, recreation, culture, arts, and community programs and services.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:The Recreation Aide I is the entry level classification that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially under closer supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties related to recreational and human services programs and activities and may reasonably expect to have the position allocated to the II level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency which meets the qualifications for the higher level class.The Recreation Aide II is the journey level classification in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full scope of assigned duties. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from Recreation Aide I, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience in recreation programs or activities. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Leader III in that the latter performs duties requiring a broader and more detailed understanding of recreation and human services program operations, and has the responsibility for supervision and training of assigned personnel.SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:General supervision is provided by a Recreation Leader III or higher level recreation program personnel. A Recreation Aide II may provide functional and technical supervision to subordinate recreation leaders or volunteers.WORK SCHEDULE:These positions work various schedules and at various locations throughout the City of Oxnard. These positions may be required to be available to work additional hours as needed to respond to workload needs. These positions are not governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay.PLEASE NOTE:Extra-Help positions are not expected to last more than 960 hours. Under the terms of the City's benefits plan and policies, this position is not eligible for benefits due to the short duration of employment. In this position, employment with the City of Oxnard is at will, and those selected for temporary placement retain the option, as does the City of Oxnard, to end employment at any time, with or without notice and with or without cause. Include but are not limited to the following:All Positions:* Provides direct program support for specific recreation and human services activities; provides direct instruction or training to program participants.* Supervises groups of children, teen and adult participants in recreation and human services programs or day camps; dispenses equipment; maintains equipment and facilities.* Assists recreation staff in conducting sports, games, and events; assists participants during these activities.* Performs administrative tasks such as filling out paperwork and answering telephones; responds to questions and concerns from the public and from program participants; provides information as appropriate and resolves concerns.* Performs other related duties as is necessary.Sports Officials:* Officiates athletic competition and signals participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play or competition.* Keeps track of event times, including race times and elapsed time during game segments, starting or stopping play when necessary.Class/Program Instructors:* Teaches specialized arts and crafts programs; provides specialized recreation and/or education programs.* Provides instruction on various sports, social, and lifesaving skills, as well as in graphic and web design techniques.The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:EDUCATION:For a Recreation Aide I:* Completion of the 8th grade.* Employees in this classification must be at least 16 years of ageFor a Recreation Aide II:* Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.EXPERIENCE:For a Recreation Aide I:* Possess the equivalent of six months of voluntary or paid recreation program experienceFor a Recreation Aide II:* Possess two years of voluntary or paid recreation program experience.LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:* Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid class C California driver's license.* A valid First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be obtained within six months of appointment.OTHER REQUIREMENTS:* Must be able to communicate in English effectively both orally and in writing.Selected candidate(s) must pass a thorough background investigation.
