Join our dedicated team in one of the safest and most vibrant communities in North Carolina, home to Elon University and a growing, diverse population of 12,000 residents. As part of our recreation department, you'll help deliver exceptional services and activities at two beautiful parks, which feature a disc golf course, playgrounds, hiking trails, a dog park, and seasonal events. With a community center and four outdoor rental facilities, this position offers the chance to contribute to the town's recreational growth and community engagement!General Statement of Duties Work is typically on Saturday and Sunday with some evening work required. Plans, coordinates, implements, supervises specific recreational activities and facility rentals. Supervises and assists with maintaining recreation and parks facilities and grounds. Distinguishing Features of the ClassThe Part-Time Recreation and Park Assistant plays a key role in supporting the planning, organization, and execution of recreational programs and activities. Under the direction of full-time staff, this position is responsible for overseeing the reservation and use of recreation facilities, maintaining participation records, and assisting with routine facility maintenance. The Recreation and Park Assistant will also serve as the facility supervisor during rental events, ensuring rules are enforced, and damages are reported. Additional responsibilities include preparing promotional materials, such as brochures and flyers, as well as requisitioning necessary supplies and equipment. Excellent customer service is essential when interacting with the public, town staff, and vendors. This role requires the ability to manage recreation center operations, organize activities, and work effectively with volunteers and community members. Examples of Duties Illustrative Examples of Work
  • Plans, organizes, supervises, and directs general and recreational programs and activities under the direction of full-time staff
  • Carries out procedures for reserving and using recreation facility and maintaining participation; prepares activity schedules and completes regular and special records and reports on programs and center usage
  • Coordinates with Public Works staff and may participate in routine maintenance of facilities, grounds, and equipment to ensure facilities and grounds are clean and orderly
  • Serves as facility supervisor for rental activities and programs; enforces center rules; reports damages and losses
  • Prepares requisitions for supplies and equipment necessary to operate the various programs and activities
  • Prepares brochures and flyers to promote center activities to the public
  • Provides excellent customer service when answering the phone and interacting with residents, visitors, town staff, volunteers, and vendors
  • Performs related duties as required
Typical Qualifications Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions Graduation from high school or GED equivalency. Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing.
  • Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. (Some assignments may require heavy work requirements.)
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, extensive reading, and visual inspections to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned and observe recreational facilities' state.

  • General knowledge of standard resources, materials, and facilities utilized in a public recreation program
  • Considerable knowledge to effectively operate computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel

  • General knowledge of facilities maintenance
  • Ability to manage a recreation center and operations
  • Ability to effectively plan, promote, organize and execute programs of recreation activities
  • Ability to train and supervise the work of volunteers, contract instructors, and participants
  • Ability to express ideas effectively in oral and written forms
  • Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and firmly with the public
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, community groups, coworkers, employees, management, and the general public
