Performs related duties as required. Recreation Leaders are typically used for the following programs: Summer Camp, Youth Center, Senior Center, Sport Programs, and Special Events. The Recreation Leader I is the first level in a three level Recreation Leader series. This is an entry level, part-time seasonal position (usually assigned to summer camp & youth sports programs) that does not require previous recreation experience. Employees in this class perform related duties according to established procedures. Examples of Duties Performed The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth to address business needs and changing business practices. Recreation Leader I:
  • Maintains a sincere interest in providing each child with a positive summer camp experience.
  • Assists with the planning, organizing, implementing, leading and monitoring of summer camp activities
  • Prepares and participates in recreational activities, such as indoor/outdoor games, sports, arts and crafts, special events and other related activities.
  • Assists in keeping the camp site neat and clean and all equipment and supplies in good order.
  • Supervises and accounts for assigned participants at the summer camp location; ensures sign-in and our procedures are followed.
  • Chaperones participants on day excursions.
  • Serves as a coach, sports official or gym/field monitor during youth and/or adult sports.
  • Assist with gym/field prep and set up for youth and/or adult sports.
  • Renders first aid in the event of injury.
Knowledge and Abilities:Knowledge of: Objectives, methods and techniques of recreation and leisure activities for youth and adults; City policies and procedures; applicable safety precautions and procedures; customer service techniques. Ability to: Plan, organize and conduct a variety of recreational activities; work a variety schedule that may include days, evenings, weekends and holidays; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain and foster positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; manage stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) highly desirable, as well as job related experience in a culturally diverse community. Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate is required within 30 days of appointment. May be required to possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License depending on assignment. Physical and Environmental Demands Work in an indoor environment with prolonged sitting and in an outdoor environment including prolonged standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, stooping and bending; work on slippery and uneven surfaces; ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds; exposure to the sun; have mobility, acute vision, acute hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties performed. Minimum QualificationsEDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:Recreation Leader I Completion of Sophomore year in High School, must be a minimum of 16 years old at the time of application. Any related experience. A typical way to acquire experience is to have actively participated in sports programs, music or art classes, or similar activities. Retirement: The City does not participate in Social Security; in lieu of social security, part-time employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City's part-time, temporary, and seasonal employees 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan. If you are a CalPERS member please notify Human Resources at the time you are hired and your retirement contributions will be handled in accordance with the City's CalPERS contract. Other Benefits: Part-time employees are not eligible for employee fringe benefits, including paid vacation, or holidays. However, pursuant to the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB1522), effective July 1, 2015,employees who work a minimum of 30 days or more in one year shall accrue one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked up to 3 days or 24 hours during a 12-month period. You will not be eligible to use accrued sick time until the 90th day of employment and you will only be allowed to carry over up to a cap of 48 hours, and limited to using no more than 24 hours per calendar year.
