Refill Support Specialist - Temporary - Outpatient Medication Refill - ShiftDefinition:Under direct supervision of either a Clinical Director or designee. The Refill Support Specialist will perform routine duties in the outpatient clinic setting.Distinguishing Characteristics:Incumbents are registered/certified Pharmacy Technicians or experienced Medical Assistant who perform routine duties to support the outpatient clinics refill services. Duties require interaction with patients, patients' families, and members of the public.Essential Functions:
  • Acts as liaison between provider and patient;
  • Refills physician's medication and/or DME orders for refills or new prescriptions; performs manual filing functions
  • Update EMR records with physicians' orders and patient information accurately and timely
  • Answers incoming telephone calls, documents all telephone encounters in the medical record;
  • Prepares and processes necessary forms for referrals, eligibility and prior authorization for medication and DME.
  • Conduct initial patient screening as assigned; Escorts patients to exam rooms; prepares patients for exam and treatment; takes and records vital signs and other necessary measurements; records chief complaint and allergies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
  • Perform EKG's as needed.
Other Functions:
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards:One-year experience as a Pharmacy Technician or 2 years of experience as a Medical Assistant handling medication/physician orders in a busy medical environment.Current and unrestricted registration by the California Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician preferred.Additional Requirements:Possession and maintenance of a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card.Appointees not possessing the American Heart Association Responder or Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire must successfully complete appropriate training and qualify for the RQI Responder certification within 60 days of employment. As a continued condition of employment, employee must maintain RQI Responder certification and competency.Some assignments may require: Basic Dysrhythmia certification.Knowledge of:A variety of techniques, methods, procedures, and equipment utilized in patient care; medical terminology and metric measurement. Non-professional pharmacy practices for inpatient and ambulatory care; restrictive nature of medications and controlled substances.Ability to:Utilize patient care techniques, methods, procedures, and equipment; maintain effective relations with medical staff and the public; follow written and oral instructions; react competently in emergency situations; take patients vitals; read and record medical terminology and metric measurement; maintain medical records. Read and understand prescriptions and chart orders for medications and related information; perform mathematical calculations for reducing bulk medications; operate a computer; work with health professionals and patients; understand and follow oral and written instructions.Supplemental:A background check may be conducted for this classification.All Kern Medical employees are designated Disaster Service Workers .
