Salary: $15.61 - $18.73 HourlyLocation : New Braunfels, TXJob Type: Full TimeJob Number: 00773Department: PUBLIC WORKSDivision: Solid Waste/RecyclingOpening Date: 09/17/2024Closing Date: 10/17/2024 5:00 PM CentralJob Summary Under close supervision, manually collects refuse and recyclables and assists with maintenance of Solid Waste Division equipment and vehicles in accordance with safety regulations and procedures. Primary Duties and Responsibilities The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Assists in providing for the delivery of high quality solid waste and recycling collection services to the public, according to City ordinances, policies, procedures and safety standards.
  • Manually collects solid waste, green waste and recyclable materials from residential and commercial sites on established routes; picks up, carries, empties and returns small garbage cans and designated recycling and green waste containers or maneuvers large garbage containers to collection vehicle and back safely without injury, damage to containers or vehicle; operates mechanism(s) for loading and dumping into collection vehicle; safely picks up litter and debris caused during collection from roadway and/or right-of-way and deposits in collection vehicle.
  • Directs solid waste vehicle operator in backing collection vehicle at all times.
  • Cleans and maintains vehicles and equipment and performs manual labor tasks as assigned; learns advanced maintenance procedures and techniques.
  • Interacts with customers; informs them of solid waste and recycling collection guidelines and City ordinances.
  • Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience:High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND one year of general manual labor experience. Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills and Other Requirements Required Knowledge of:
  • City policies and procedures.
  • City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Required Skill in:
  • Following standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to hazardous equipment, dust, damp/wet surfaces and high noise levels and extended periods of sitting and driving; requires ability to climb, use fine motor skills and ability to safely reach, twist, lift, carry and move items weighing up to eighty (80) pounds.
  • Employee may be required to work weekends, holidays and other irregularly scheduled times.
  • May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
