Job Purpose

To ensure the safe and efficient operation of cranes, particularly within wind industry environments. You will develop and enforce safety protocols, conduct inspections, provide training, and support branch managers and crane operators to achieve safety excellence.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety policies and procedures specific to crane operations in the wind industry, aligned with OSHA 1926 Subpart CC, ANSI B30 standards, and other relevant regulations.

2. Conduct regular inspections and audits of crane equipment, rigging, and operational procedures to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards specific to the wind industry.

3. Investigate crane-related incidents, accidents, near misses, and precursors of significant injuries to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.

4. Collaborate with branch managers, site supervisors, and crane operators to assess job site safety risks, develop safety plans, and implement effective controls tailored to the unique challenges of the wind industry.

5. Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, training sessions, incident reports, and safety-related documentation; prepare and present comprehensive safety reports to management.

6. Act as a subject matter expert on crane safety within the wind industry during regulatory inspections and audits; ensure timely compliance with permits and certifications.

7. Lead safety committee meetings and initiatives to promote a proactive safety culture among employees and contractors.

8. Monitor and analyze safety performance metrics such as Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred (DART) rate, and leading indicators specific to the wind industry; identify trends and implement strategies to improve safety performance.

9. Stay current with industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes related to crane operations in the wind industry; recommend and implement improvements to safety programs accordingly.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) and 1 5 years experience.
  • 2. In-depth knowledge of crane safety regulations and standards applicable to the wind industry (OSHA 1926 Subpart CC, ANSI B30 standards, etc.).

    3. Strong field training background in forklifts, aerial lifts, and mobile cranes, with specific experience in wind turbine construction and maintenance.

    4. Experience working in the Operations and Maintenance sector of the renewable energy and power generation industry.

    5. Experience working with union workforces is a plus.

    6. Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

    7. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective training sessions, presentations, and safety reports.

    8. Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) or Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST) certification preferred.

    9. Certification as a Certified Crane Operator (CCO), Crane Safety Specialist (CSS), or Certified Crane Inspector (CCI) is a plus.

    10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with safety management software.

    Working conditions

    Frequent travel to various wind facility locations within the region to conduct inspections, training sessions, and safety meetings. Work may involve exposure to construction sites, particularly wind turbine sites, where cranes are operated. Flexible hours may be required to accommodate safety inspections, training needs, and emergencies.

    Physical requirements

    Ability to stand, walk, and climb stairs and ladders as necessary during crane inspections and site visits. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds of safety equipment or materials. Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by the job site.
