Job Description:

We seek a Registered Medical Aide (RMA) to help us care for our elderly patients. In this position, you will be primarily responsible for administering medications in a safe manner and within regulation requirements. This may include helping patients with their daily activities, helping them move or feeding patients. While these credentials are important, it is just as crucial that you have specific experience working with elderly patients. You must also have good physical stamina, a caring and patient personality, and excellent communication skills.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medications and administration techniques
  • Administer medication(s) per unit dose system
  • Complete the medication pass within regulation timeframe and without error
  • Document and sign all medication administration records daily
  • Be knowledgeable on classifications of each medication administered and facilitate patient awareness of medication purpose and effect
  • Communicate and give appropriate information but never give medical advice or diagnosis
  • Use medical terminology appropriately in administration of medications.
  • Follow proper procedures for pouring/preparing medications, various instillations and treatments. Measure and pour medications using aseptic technique and accuracy
  • Store and secure all medications per regulations
  • Keep medication cart within direct view at all times, keep locked when unattended
  • Document all medication errors on incident report and report to staff nurse.
  • Understand implications of Residents Rights regarding medication, treatment decisions and confidentiality and record and report all refusals in appropriate manner.
  • Provide personal/nursing care in accordance with a resident care plan.
  • Monitor & respond to resident requests and needs in a dignified and respectful manner.
  • Assist in preparing residents for various activities within and outside the center.
  • Ensure that all resident care is provided in a dignified and respectful manner.
  • Perform basic nursing care procedures for residents as required.
  • Assist with mobility and transfers, using proper body mechanics and equipment
  • Create a clean, comfortable, and safe environment for residents and ensure their needs are met.
  • Maintain resident documentation records for activities of daily living, restorative programs, and resident-specific forms.
  • Maintain and work within the established departmental, center, and corporate policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement programs, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled training, educational classes, and orientation programs to maintain certification and enhance the quality of care.
  • Perform other related activities as assigned or requested.

SKILLS

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and basic healthcare procedures
  • Ability to process information accurately, make appropriate decisions and take appropriate action based upon the information available
  • Ability to administer medications accurately and safely
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining attention to detail and having good organizational skills
  • Ability to work in stressful environment and deal with medical emergency situations
  • Familiarity with senior care/skilled nursing principles and practices
  • Proficiency in using electronic health record systems (e.g., Cerner, PCC, EPIC, MEDITECH, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to caregiving
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Experience in nursing home or senior care setting is a plus
  • Knowledge of working with individuals with developmental disabilities is a plus

RMA REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED certificate or higher
  • Must have completed the medication training by a state-approved trainer
  • Must have current Medication Aide license through Virginia Board of Nursing; RMA License
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • BLS/CPR Certificate
  • COVID-19 Vaccination
  • Experience working with elderly individuals
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent physical stamina
  • Caring and empathetic disposition
