Job DetailsJob Location Bronx, NY Position Type Full Time Salary Range $85,000.00 - $85,000.00 Salary/year DescriptionGENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Safe Haven Program is a 24-hour program that serves young persons in immigration custody who are awaiting release to their sponsors. The Nurse is responsible for the oversight, coordination and provision of medical and mental health care of the children in the program including screening for infectious diseases, managing prescription medication, and triaging medical complaints and responding to medical emergencies. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain accurate and current information on children taking prescription medication, ensuring that medication dosages are properly separated.
  • Track children with EpiPens and inhalers and provide training to staff and foster parents on proper utilization of those medical devices.
  • Supervise procedures for students taking medication during school hours.
  • Maintain contact with prescribing doctors and with foster parents and staff to ensure correct prescriptions are followed, including regular review of medication logs.
  • Review and maintain accurate and current health records in accordance with local governmental regulations and funder requirements.
  • Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through prevention, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases to the appropriate local health authority, including review of medical incident reports.
  • Assist in the formulation of health policies, goals, and objectives for Safe Haven.
  • Assist in the development of emergency response plans including training on safety procedures, in particular compliance with OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Standard
  • In coordination with Medical Coordinators and Shift Leaders, ensure that protective personal equipment and first aid equipment is available in all classroom and work areas.
  • Document all health visits or consultations in the UAC Portal and in physical charts as required by funders and state licensing.
  • Liaise with DCS Medical on health issues as necessary, creating discharge medical plans for complex medical concerns.
  • Liaise with external providers to ensure timely specialist follow-up.
  • Provide health education assistance and training as needed.
  • Teach parenting skills as they relate to child development and health needs of children as needed.
  • Assist with first aid procedures for medical emergencies.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) NYS License
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a school nurse or similar experience in a medical or teaching hospital, medical center or related work area
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and ensure that our school complies with all designated NYS and NYC Department of Health regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to work with outside prescribing doctors
  • Demonstrated ability to work with shelter and foster care staff
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical assistance, professional development activities and training to school staff in areas of health and safety
  • Demonstrated ability to assist students in medical emergencies
  • Demonstrated ability to network with the medical system in times of crisis and emergency
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the effects and contraindications of the medications taken by our students
  • Demonstrated ability to provide routine first aid training to adults and adolescents
  • Demonstrated ability to provide the level of written data and documentation needed to support the medical services available at our school
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the life pressures our students face and structure supportive training for them to better meet these pressures in an informed way
  • Demonstrated ability to keep current on any Department of Health regulations and medical requirements
