Job Title: Registered Nurse Inpatient Department: Behavioral ServicesReports to: Revision Date: 8/3/2020Grade Level: 24 Status: Non-ExemptJob Summary:The Registered Nurse provides total nursing care to patients of all ages appropriate to Inpatient Behavioral Health Services. Collaborates with multi-disciplinary teams to assure high quality, cost effective care for patients. Effectively interacts with patients, healthcare members, and other agencies, while maintaining standards of professional Nursing. Effectively interacts with physicians, patients, and health care team members while maintaining high professional standards.Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Complete accurate patient assessments, initiation and implementation of Nursing Care Plan, with evaluation and alteration of nursing care as needed.
  • Develop and maintain Treatment Plans according to Policy and Procedures, following principles of asepsis and infection control guidelines when performing patient care.
  • Assesse individual patient learning needs and institute teaching methods in preparation for discharge.
  • Regularly assesses nursing care, identifies potential problems, develops nursing interventions, and directs implementation of nursing interventions to all health care team members.
  • Complete daily assessments on patients and completes group sessions as assigned.
  • Monitor clients on constant observation as assigned.
  • Delegates staff assignments/responsibilities and assumes responsibility for charge position when designated; Ensures all assignments are completed by end of shift.
  • Identifies and appropriately uses chain of command to resolve unit, staff and patient problems.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Administers medication in accordance with policies/procedures/standards of care with thorough knowledge of medications administered; correctly identifies patient by name and ID band for all direct care, procedures or treatments.
  • Ensure patients with allergies are properly identified.
  • Prepare and administer medications via all acceptable routes.
  • Accurately identify reactions to drugs; records and reports reactions appropriately.
  • Maintain and correctly use of forms and computer programs required in the operation of the unit.
  • Transcribe correctly and implement appropriately all physician orders per Policy and Procedure.
  • Regularly check equipment and emergency crash cart per unit-specific policy.
  • Accurately, clearly and concisely record all pertinent information on the patient's medical record, according to Policy and Procedure.
  • Identify and correlate abnormal diagnostic data with patient status; report and record.
  • Maintains proper level of stock and emergency supplies as unit requires.
  • Follow principles of asepsis and infection control guidelines when performing patient care.
  • Routinely provides for patient safety through preventive measures (i.e. siderails, restraints as per physician order, low bed position and safe transport to other areas).
  • Handle telephone information requests with courtesy, accuracy and maintain patient confidentiality; receives information and distributes messages appropriately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities (Unit Specific):
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to create superior patient experiences while generating positive guest relations.
  • Ability to work effectively and communicate effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in medication administration and practiced phlebotomy skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as active listening skills.
  • Professionalism and business acumen appropriate for working with guests, physicians, employees and volunteers.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with current NYS Licensure required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related health care profession preferred.
Working Conditions:
  • Requires use of computer programs as well as assembling, using, checking and maintaining required equipment.
  • Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling beds, wheelchairs and recliners in excess of approximately 200 pounds with assistance. Requires lifting, carrying, repositioning, and transferring patients using proper body mechanics.
  • Position requires attendance, as scheduled, to ensure requirements are met.
  • Requires attending meetings as well as participation on committees as required.
  • Actively participates in in-service programs, in Quality Assurance programs and CQI, cross-training; attends all mandatory classes as required; completes unit-specific competencies.
  • Occasionally requires assignments to other units/shifts as hospital needs require.
  • Complies with DOH requirements for annual health assessments and required immunizations.
