Position: Registered NurseDepartment:Hotchkiss School Health ServicesFLSA:Non-ExemptReports to:Director of NursingSchedule:Position 1: Full-time (36 hours): Night/Evening Shift: includes 3 shifts from 7 pm -7 am weekly; plus two on-call overnight shifts every 2 weeks.Position 2: Part-time (20 hours): includes 1 night shift from 7 p.m. - 7 a.m. No on-call commitment.Designation:Staff, Academic year, Benefit EligibleTravel:RarePOSITION SUMMARY:The Registered Nurse identifies and treats student health disorders and provides education and guidance in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention. The Registered Nurse's duty of care includes evaluating, monitoring, and recording the physical conditions of students and referring students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by this employee require discretionary judgment and analysis. The work of the Registered Nurse requires independent decision-making, a professional and friendly attitude, and effective communication.The School is eager to accept applications from individuals who are excited to support an inclusive and warm learning community for students from a wide array of backgrounds and experiences.REGISTERED NURSE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Provide appropriate primary health care and nursing intervention based on standing medical orders and through a clinical protocol, including assessment, care, referral and support.Render routine and acute care needs in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and follow guidelines of universal precautions in all care rendered.Administer medication to appropriate students, after obtaining parental permission and a doctor's order for prescription medication ensuring proper documentation of same, monitoring students for side effects and reactions.Perform routine and emergency first aid for illness and injuries,Maintain accurate and complete student health records, monitoring, reporting, and recording symptoms or changes in patient condition while adhering to precise documentation protocols.Perform assessment and treatment of health needs of student body as presented to the health center.Make referrals to School resources as necessary including counseling.Collect information for State reports.Regularly communicate with, parents, faculty/administration exhibiting skill in diplomacy tact, discretion, and sensitivity.Protect the confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties.Follow established protocols for the management of infectious disease including use of appropriate PPE, hygiene, disinfection, and management of medical waste.Work collaboratively with other Health Center staff, assessing, implementing, and planning patient nursing care plans,Remain reachable and available to report to the Health Center within 1 hour during scheduled on-call hours. During on-call hours the nurse must remain free from impairment due to alcohol or other performance-impairing substances.Attend in-service sessions, department meetings, and staff meetings as needed or requested.Additional duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned.SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:Valid, current license as a Registered Nurse license in the State of Connecticut, or eligibility to be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut.Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and AED from a recognized provider.Possess a high level of personal and professional integrity.Possess the ability to effectively communicate with strong interpersonal skills.Ability to maintain proper record keeping and care plan management using computer software.Possess knowledge of current health issues and nursing assessment skills, both physical and emotional, as they relate to adolescent students.Possess competent computer skills to support communication and record keeping.Must be able to exercise excellent judgment, maintain confidentiality, and possess strong organizational skills.Ability to prioritize and effectively manage diverse tasks, sometimes in a stressful environment.PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:Bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, standing, carrying.Work with students who may have infectious diseases, including but not limited to COVID-19.Regular contact with school administrators, teachers, counselors, and other medical professionals.Duties are generally performed in the School Health Center and may extend to other areas of the School's campus.The Hotchkiss School is a tobacco-free environment.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:The essential functions and basic skills have been included.
