The Registered Nurse (R.N.) delivers nursing care for patients across their life span, and through the nursing process, assesses plans, implements, and documents the effects of care. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. These nursing functions of the R.N. are carried out according to the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, St. Lukes Physician Group (SLPG) Mission Statement, and the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing. The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Works in conjunction with the Medical Oncologist and Physician Extender to provide the highest level of patient care. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the use of the EMR to manage physician ordered Treatment and Therapy plans. Communicates with infusion center staff in a timely manner to help coordinate and facilitate patient care. Demonstrates proficiency in general patient education. Provides information specifically tailored to the patients disease process and treatment plan while considering patient and family health literacy. Provides 1:1 education on intravenous therapy including treatment length, side effect management, and proper use of supportive medications. Provides 1:1 education for oral anticancer therapy, including proper administration/compliance, safe handling and side effect management and reporting. Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills in telephone triage, answering patient questions, managing patient symptoms, and escalating situations to physician when appropriate. Enters retrospective orders into EMR per protocol for medications, imaging, and procedures. Serves as the primary contact for oncology patient care coordination throughout the network. Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team, such as, Navigation, Nutrition, Oncology Finance, Social Work, Infusion Center, Radiation Oncology, etc., to coordinate care Maintains detailed knowledge of computer software systems as it relates to job functions. Responds to written and telephone inquiries from patients, insurance carriers and facilities regarding coverage of planned services. Working knowledge of existing patient assistance programs Functions as a professional role model and resource person; provides guidance to coworkers and students. Participates in identifying nursing needs in the practice and supports practice goals and objectives. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within SLPG as well as proper release of information. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements. Demonstrates/models the Networks Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through effective and efficient use of resources in daily processes and practices. Complies with Network and department polices regarding attendance and dress code. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient. Maintains personal responsibility for professional development through active participation in in services and/or continuing education programs. Must met current Commission on Cancer RN accreditation standards and maintain ONS chemotherapy provider card. OTHER FUNCTIONS: Other related duties as assigned May be required to travel to other office locations as needed MOST COMPLEX DUTY: Working knowledge of Ambulatory Oncology best practices and treatment plans Ability to maintain a working knowledge of insurance and precertification requirements Reviewing a patients electronic chart for information that is needed when requesting precertification. Ability to communicate effectively with physicians and team members Ability to prioritize work in an environment of constant change while meeting the needs of the office. SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO): Outpatient Oncology Nurse Manager Network Director Oncology Nursing and Infusion Services COMMUNICATIONS : Must possess the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, physicians, and team members. Must be assertive and pleasant in order to gather accurate and complete data. Must be able to convey information to patients in a way that they can understand and must know when to listen. Must be able to remain calm, tactful, and even-tempered in a variety of situations. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS : Must demonstrate a positive attitude. Must be customer service driven, motivated and ambitious. Must enjoy working with people and have the ability to collaborate with peers to solve problems. Must be proactive. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS : Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours at a time). Continually uses fingers for patient care, writing and viewing patient chart in Electronic Medical Record. Routinely uses upper extremities; occasionally lift items up to 25 pounds. Occasionally push, cart with supplies up to 30 pounds. Occasionally push wheelchair with patient weighing up to 325 pounds. Stoop, bend and reach above shoulder level regularly. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation and taking blood pressure readings. General vision, near vision and peripheral vision all required. EDUCATION : Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania or seek Pennsylvania licensure through reciprocity. Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the state of New Jersey. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE : Oncology experience preferred. Experience in ambulatory oncology nursing helpful Oncology Certification encouraged (OCN or equivalent) Successful completion and maintenance of BLS Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration course must be completed with successful post-test within 6 months of employment.
