Summary:
The RN, Lactation Consultant provides knowledge in the practice of lactation management. Diagnoses lactation problems, plans and implements intervention and evaluation outcomes. Conducts prenatal breastfeeding classes and evaluates educational outcomes. Provides consultation and outpatient care for families experiencing difficulty breastfeeding. Serves as a consultant for healthcare providers concerning lactation as it relates to patient's health problems.
Responsibilities:
A. Evaluates and consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems.
B. Conducts bedside lactation rounds daily.
C. Plans, teaches and evaluates classes for expectant and new breastfeeding mothers.
D. Plans, teaches and conducts in-service education for Women's Services nursing staff.
E. Creates a culture that promotes learning for staff and patients.
F. Participates in communication and decision-making activities of the Women's Services.
G. Carries out other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
A. Education/Skills
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
B. Experience
Previous RN experience in Women's Services. Previous experience as a Lactation Consultant preferred.
C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
Current Texas State RN license; CPR; NRP; IBCLC within 1 year of hire/transfer if previous Lactation Consulting experience and no experience within 2 ½ years based on IBCLC required worked hours.
