  • This position is primary located at the Aiken-Barnwell Mental Health Center, 1135 Gregg Highway, Aiken, SC 29803.
  • This position may travel between Aiken and Barnwell County.
Job Purpose
  • Provides nursing care to the patients at ABMHC. Serves on the Assertive Community Treatment Team two days per week managing medication system in conjunction with the psychiatrist. Administers and documents medication treatment. Screens and monitors the patient for medical problems and side effects. Engages in health promotion, prevention, and education activities. Develops strategies to maximize taking medications as prescribed. Communicates and coordinates services with team members and medical providers. Educates the team in monitoring psychiatric symptoms and medication side effects. Works in the clinics three days per week.
Job Functions
  • Maintains patient care hours annually (645 annually-first year of employment).
  • Assesses health, social, psychiatric, and medical needs of ABMHC patients.
  • Administers scheduled intramuscular medications to patients as ordered by ABMHC prescribers and monitors patients regularly for beneficial effects, side effects, and other medication related issues.
  • Develops strategies to maximize taking medications as prescribed.
  • Engages in health promotion, prevention and education activities.
  • Provides medical, psychiatric, and nursing education and consultation to patients, caregivers, and staff.
  • Ensures patients are seen in accordance with their needs (medical/psychiatric appointments).
  • Completes clinical documentation using collaborative documentation and ensures documentation meets SCDMH/QA standards.
  • Participates in clinical supervision and daily treatment team meetings.
  • Complies with Corporate Compliance, Policy, and Risk Management Plan.
  • Ensures timely completion of prior authorizations.
  • Pursues professional development through collegial consultation, continuing education, and licensure.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
Minimum and Additional RequirementsState Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Agency Requirements:
  • Licensed as a registered nurse by the SC Board of Nursing.
  • Two (2) years' experience.
  • One (1) year experience working with adults diagnosed with serious mental illness.
Preferred QualificationsAgency (Facility) Preferences:
  • Knowledge of the techniques and best practices of the nursing professional.
  • Knowledge of medical and nursing terminology.
  • Ability to evaluate a client's medical status and needs and use knowledge and judgment to respond appropriately.
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate client medical care plans.
  • Ability to provide individual health education and counseling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to function as a team member. Knowledge of privacy laws.
  • Supervision provided by Nurse Manager and ACT Team Lead (MHPII).
  • Employee is responsible for agency's policies and procedures.
  • Position will work with Assertive Community Treatment Team two days per week seeing patients in the community.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Travel to patient's homes required for ACT.
  • Will also serve patients in the clinics three days per week.
  • Ability to operate a state vehicle.
  • Ability to lift 5 pounds.
  • Position is considered essential and may be called back during crises/disasters/emergencies.
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
