Summary of Position: Organizes and administers individualized, professional patient care to patients undergoing cancer treatment.# Provides nursing care as directed by the medical staff, and in accordance with the objectives, policies and procedures of the hospital and the state Nurse Practice Act.# Maintains standards of nursing care as established. Primary Job Responsibilities: Chemotherapy Administration: Possesses knowledge regarding treatment protocols, goals of treatment and potential side effects to treatment.# Proficient in establishing peripheral or central venous access.# Adheres to established protocols to safely administer chemotherapy, hydration and supportive medications.# Assesses patient throughout the administration of treatment, manages symptoms and monitors for allergic reactions.# Provides proficient care to patients in a medical emergency. Patient Assessment: During patient visit, assesses patient, reviews medication and symptom lists, obtains vital signs, height and weight.# Assesses venous access.# Assesses for symptoms related to the disease proves or chemotherapy.# Assesses patients and families understanding of treatment and symptom management. Communication: Triages calls from patients, family member and community health providers.# Communicates information to the patient#s provider and assists in implementing a plan of care.# Provides assistance to patients calling for symptom control.# Provides patients with prescriptions via hard copy or escribed/telephoned to appropriate pharmacy.# Communicates plan of care to patients, family and community health providers.# Assist in scheduling patients who need to be seen on an emergent basis. Patient Care: Collaborates with the provider to formulate and implement a plan of care for treatment, symptom management, palliative care and hospice care.# Assists in preparing chemotherapy orders, admixture sheets and prescriptions.# Collaborates with outside agencies as needed.# Obtains blood and urine specimens.# Maintains implantable port devices. Patient Education: Participates in developing patient education material for treatment specific protocols and symptom management.# Reviews patient educational materials with patients and their families.# Provides patients with appropriate teaching materials, resource booklets, prescriptions and calendar for treatment cycles. Administrative: Prepares disability forms for the providers to review and return to the patients in a timely manner.# Obtains insurance verification for chemotherapy.# Obtains pre-authorizations for prescriptions when required. Minimum Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, and currently licensed to practice in New York State.# BSN preferred.# At least three (3) years# nursing experience.# OCN credentialed required.# Active membership in ONS preferred. # Salary Range: $32 - $53.81 Pay Grade: N10 Compensation may vary based upon, but not limited to: overall experience and qualifications, shift, and location.
