Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment plan of care. Communicates with Surgeon and Anesthesiologist continuously and as needed about patient condition. Maintains patient care standards and acts as a patient safety advocate.Job Results & Essential Function* Practice the philosophy, policies, procedures, and quality standards of the Ambulatory Surgery according to the mission, vision and values of St. James Hospital.* Perform and complete daily duties in a timely and safe manner.* The duties of the RN-ASU are divided into two categories: Pre-op and Post-op RN.Pre-Op RN* Conduct pre-op phone interviews up to seven days before the patient is scheduled for surgery. Uses all facets of Nursing Assessment to ascertain:* Physical status including handicaps and pre-existing conditions* Mental and emotional status* Involvement of family/significant other* Allergies* Current medications, including dosage and frequency, and any medications to be omitted or taken the day of surgery* Type of surgery and anesthesia* Discharge expectations including home care, expected pain, and medications* Patient teaching to include all aspects of the surgical procedure and home care.* Allow the patient ample opportunity to ask questions and explore areas where he or she may be apprehensive.* Documentation of all pertinent information on the OR Nursing notes, under Pre-Op Assessment.* Build and gather all paperwork and testing results for surgical chart, according to SJH practice.On the day of surgery, the RN is responsible for:* The admission of the patient, including vitals, changing clothes, starting IV line, etc.* Review all information and doctor orders pertinent to the surgical procedure.* Confirm consents with the patient and family.* Perform post-op discharge teaching.Post Op RN* When the patient arrives in Post-Op, The RN receives a handoff report of patient's condition, working with the other surgical team members to provide safe and effective post-op care. The RN monitors the patient's vital signs, pain and condition as per protocol.In addition, the Post-op RN conducts all duties of discharging the patient, including, but not limited to:* Give verbal and written discharge instructions to the patient/family member* Assess readiness of patient to be discharged.* Coordinates with the surgeon regarding post-op orders and medication prescriptions and medication reconciliation.* Discharge patients with discharge criteria is met* Document and check charts for accuracy and completeness before sending the chart to billing department/medical records.* In addition, the RN in the ASU is responsible for participation in and the implementation of the organization's Corporate Compliance Plan into all area of responsibility. Responsible for completion of annual education and health requirements. May be cross-trained to work in PACU when needed.Additional Functions:* Physical abilities include, but are not limited to, fine and gross motor movements of hand and arms; reaching, sitting, standing, walking for extended periods; ability to push, pull, and lift patients and equipment utilizing good body mechanics. Hearing and vision within average functions.* Ability to handle high stress situations and multi-task, handle congested and noisy areas at times.RequirementsEducation & Experience* Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York.Licenses and/or Certifications* Current RN License* Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification* Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification* Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification* Meet the mandatory standard for annual competencies.
