The ED Staff Nurse will assist the physician during procedures and monitor patient vital signs to ensure they are able to handle different types of treatmentEssential FunctionsReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.The ED Staff Nurse is expected to perform the following essential functions:
- Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans
- Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements
- Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards, policies, and protocols
- Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology
- Records patients' current vital signs
- Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing, and treatments
- Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications
- Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with applicable policies regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse
- Provides IV therapy
- Cleans and bandages wounds
- Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients
- Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies
- Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment
- Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner
- Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
- Works collaboratively with physicians and staff to provide exceptional care;
- Manages multiple cases simultaneously, prioritizing needs continually
- Complies with all legal and safety requirements at all times
- Maintains a clean, sanitary, and organized work environment
- Works efficiently without compromising quality of care
- Abides by all hospital rules and regulations
- Acts in a composed and professional manner, especially under pressure
- Attends all required training and continuing education events
Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies Required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within six months of hire
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within six months of hire
- Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification within one year of hire
- Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal

Physical demands
- Ability to perform various motor skills such as reaching, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, grasping and arm-hand coordination on a continuous basis.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques
Travel required
Required education, licensure, and experience
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Must hold an active WV Registered Nursing License
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of the principals and procedures of professional nursing by demonstrating adequate technical skills and adequate technical vocabulary
- Experience with electronic health record system(s)
Preferred education, licensure, and experience
- Emergency room nursing experience
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification
