Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the direct supervision of the Director, the RN is responsible for the provision of safe and effective care of the perioperative patient.
What you will do in this role:
- Assumes responsibility for efficient patient flow throughout the pre-admission process.
- Possesses comprehensive knowledge of clinical components of care required in the Pre-admit area to provide for direct patient care.
- Possesses comprehensive knowledge of medical-legal responsibilities to fulfill position responsibilities.
- Maintains communication with the director or designee and Anesthesia staff to ensure that any problems during pre-registration are promptly communicated.
- Assists the director with overtime coverage of unit as required to meet the needs of the patients and the unit.
- Performs pre-operative assessment of patients in a timely manner
- Implements physician's orders effectively and safely in accordance with standards of practice.
- Identify appropriate resources, troubleshoot issues, and interpret and initiate consult information.
- Maintains patient safety through surveillance of all practices in the Pre-admit area, including response to hospital codes.
- Proficient in the utilization of specialized skills to provide care to patients in the Pre-admit area.
- Reconcile charts and information needed for patient clearance.
- Applies principles of body mechanics in the provision of direct patient care activities and in the supervision of other personnel in the Pre-admit area.
- Utilizes communication skills effectively in working with patients, physicians, and personnel.
- Effectively determine patients needs for further labs/EKG.
- Assist with lab draws and performance of patient EKG's as needed on the unit.
- Plans, coordinates, provides, and supervises nursing care to promote continuity of patient care during the pre-admission assessment period.
- Exercises judgment in the delegation of activities to ensure that patient care is provided by staff with identified competencies in meeting individual patient needs.
- Communicates effectively with the director or designee and other team members to ensure that any problems or opportunities to improve services in the Pre-admit are addressed.
- Communicates effectively with Medical Staff to facilitate coordination of patient care among all disciplines providing patient care services.
- Acts as patient advocate in obtaining care with questioning of orders or other practices as indicated using appropriate channels of communication.
- Maintains current knowledge of developments and trends in the provision of perioperative nursing care through the use of inservices, professional organizations, and other self-directed learning activities.
- Maintains awareness of current Hospital and Departmental operational standards which impact on position responsibilities.
What qualifications you will need:
- Previous clinical nursing experience in PACU environment desired.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
- Registered Nurse must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
- Registered Nurse Diploma must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
