Working Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day / 5 days per week. Position Summary: Coordinate and participate in a variety of clinical and administrative patient care activities and procedures within scope of practice in the clinic. Provide backup to clinic positions when needed. Responsibilities of Position:
- Meet with all chemo patients prior to the physician coming into the appointment room
- Call for prelim MRI results well prior to the patient's arrival. This includes informing RPCI LPN Liaison, Wendy Lorenz for any imaging needs ahead of time.
- Make sure that all patients have had appropriate testing completed prior to the appointment, including patients that are not on Chemo and review all labs results prior their visit
- Chart prep for consults and brain tumor reevaluation: check charts for completeness including MRI results, lab results, pathology and other notes with specialist
- Triage all neuro-oncology phone calls and help to assist with other neurology triage as direct by clinic manager and/or if time permits.
- Adhere to nursing scope of practice when triaging patients. Consulting physician with any recommended medication changes unless they are OTC medications. Discuss any patient questions with the treating provider prior to making recommendations
- Administer medication and special nursing care techniques prescribed for patients.
- Assist in scheduling Brain Tumor patients and communicate with a provider if no spots are available. Work with other clinic staff to ensure add-on appointments can be scheduled
- Enter standing orders for all patients as direct by physician
- Update clinic flow sheets as needed for all providers
- Complies with quality assurance, HIPAA, customer focus, infection control, safety and other policies as set forth.
- Assist in any Brain Tumor research studies
- Participate in any extracurricular activities related to the Neuro-Oncology clinic
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested by Clinic Managers and Providers
Skills & Experience Necessary:
- Ability to triage patient problems appropriately, seeking guidance as needed
- Patient assessment skills
- High degree of verbal communication and interpersonal skills to determine needs, provide information, instruct, and provide emotional support
- Strong planning, problem-solving, organizational, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
- Strong computer skills and ability to learn EMR system quickly
- Ability to address and resolve conflict in a professional manner
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Ability to be flexible
- Previous phone triage experience preferred
- Prior experience with neurology and/or oncology diagnoses preferred
Required Education
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program and a Registered Nurse in the State of New York with 2-4 years prior clinical experience, preferably in the acute care setting
Working Conditions:
- Minimal physical effort while rooming patients, frequent walking.
- Potentially prolonged periods of standing.
- May include assistance to the disabled patient in transfers to and from wheelchairs.
- Regular fine hand manipulation
- Associated health risks related to patient exposure including body fluids
- Sometimes bending, squatting, reach above shoulder level, crouching, kneeling, and pushing/pulling. Requires some lifting, usually not in excess of 10 pounds.
Compensation:
- Most candidates will start within the first quartile of the pay range
- Rates are commensurate with experience
