Job Summary

The Unit Nurse Supervisor role is a critical part of the Med/Surg Care team. The Unit Nurse Supervisor works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager in the planning, implementing, and evaluation of nursing practice within the department. They work with the manager to provide clinical as well as administrative leadership for the unit. This includes creating an environment that provides high quality patient centered care. The Supervisor works collaboratively with staff, physicians, other administrative personnel and team members.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position in a healthcare facility which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Shared on call time, including every other weekend as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required. This position also collaborates with other Clinical Managers and the Administrative Nursing Supervisors.

Required Education, Competencies & Experience

-Current Qualifications of Unit RN

-Unencumbered RN license in the State of Vermont

-Excellent attention to detail & thoroughness

-Excellent communication skills

-High level of familiarity with hospital safety practices and procedures

-Demonstrates knowledge and competence in clinical area of responsibility

-Demonstrates excellent leadership skills

-Current certification in Basic Life Support and ACLS

-Completes annual education requirements

-Abides by the Porter Hospital Compliance Program

-Strong time management skills

-Personal effectiveness - credibility

Essential Functions of the Unit Nurse Supervisor

-The Unit Nurse Supervisor reports to the Unit Manager

-Responsible and accountable for their individual nursing judgements and actions and works within their scope of practice

-Delegates unit and patient responsibilities to nursing team members according to each team member's education, training and availability and in accordance Vermont State Law

-Provides continuity and oversight of day to day functions of the department in the absence of the Nurse Manager.

-Responsible and accountable for maintaining standards of nursing care on their unit on a twenty-four (24) hour basis

-Delegates; reviews performance improvement monitoring; analyzes and evaluates department to improve nursing care

-Prepares unit-specific performance standards in collaboration with the Nurse Manager and in alignment with nationally accepted standards of practice

-Provides appropriate follow-up to staff regarding quality of care

-Assists the Unit Manager in the evaluation of staff members on a regular basis, based on designated standards of performance

-Assists the Unit Manager with new employee orientation within guidelines established by the unit's professional organization and for bargaining unit members under the terms of the CBA. Evaluates concurrently, at 90 days when orientation is complete

-Assesses learning needs of staff and initiates appropriate action in coordination with the Clinical Director of Education. Responsible for on-going training with clear goals and expectations.
