Job Description:

SUMMARY:Under the direction of the NurseSupervisor, the Registered Nurse - Triage provides indirect professionalnursing care to a patient population from 0 to over 100 years of age inaccordance with established Corporate and departmental policies and procedures,and state and federal laws, to ensure safe, efficient, and effective patientcare. Functions as primary liaisonbetween patients, staff, and physicians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include thefollowing. Other duties may be assigned.

Triages, prioritizes,responds, and refers incoming patient phone calls.

Instructs patient andfamily regarding medications and treatment instructions.

Correctly managesphysician referrals and appointment scheduling.

Correctly managesphysician-to-physician consultation and referrals.

Manages healthinformation inquiries. Offers optionsand alternatives within limits of nursing knowledge, approved healthinformation resources, departmental and physician specific guidelines,established criteria and policies and procedures.

Responsible foraccurate documentation and maintaining complete records.

Ensures chartingreflects the conversation and instructions given to the caller and alsoreflects patients and/or families level of understanding and compliance withinstructions.

Ensures thatpatient/caregiver is directed in accordance with physicians instructions.

Demonstratesprofessionalism and promotes a harmonious working environment by communicatingclearly and working cooperatively with team members and all internal andexternal customers.

Demonstrates concernfor cost effective operations by working productively to reduce waste andinefficiencies.

Accepts personalresponsibility for updating and increasing professional skills and knowledge.

Assists in evaluatingand formulating the policies, procedures, decisions, and solutions related toTriage services.

Participates inCorporate safety procedures and programs.

Demonstrates properuse and care of ancillary equipment including phones, computers, printers, faxmachines, copiers, etc.

Ensures complianceprogram is adhered to.

Performs clinicduties as needed.

EDUCATION AND/OREXPERIENCE:Associates and/or bachelors degree from a school of nursing and currentlicense as a Registered Nurse in the State of Tennessee required. Two years experience working as a registerednurse with at least one year in triage.

OTHERSKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledgeof the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat injuries,diseases, and deformities, including treatment alternatives, drug propertiesand interactions, and preventive healthcare measures. Ability to establish and maintain aneffective working relationship with faculty members, students, residents,staff, patients, and other third parties.Ability to concentrate on the situation at hand and listeneffectively. Ability to operatecomputer, keyboard, and printer. Ability to organize tasks; work as a teammember and independently using sound nursing skills with a variety ofprofessional disciplines. Knowledge ofICD-10 and CPT coding. Knowledge of health insurance procedures toobtain pre-authorizations and/or referrals.Convey a professional and positive image and attitude.
