POSITION DESCRIPTION:Under general supervision, the Registered Veterinary Technician assists the Zoo & Aquarium's veterinarians in administering daily care and treatment of collection animals, in accordance with the Zoo & Aquarium's Program of Veterinary Care veterinary program. This position will also perform work assignments involving the care of animals at the Veterinary Health Center, as well as maintenance of enclosure, service, and holding areas as needed.
POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Duties Percentage Supports and adheres to the Zoo & Aquarium's program of veterinary care and preventive medical programs, by assisting with daily tasks, including:
- Administering medications, according to established protocols and laws.
- Monitoring anesthesia and assisting with surgical procedures.
- Assisting with movement, capture and restraint of animals.
- Performing routine laboratory processing analysis.
- Monitoring health and welfare of hospitalized and quarantined animals.
- Preparing instrumentation for anesthetic procedures.
- Changing dressings and bandaging as directed.
- Coordinating, purchasing and stocking medical supplies.
- Assisting in maintaining the cleanliness and daily functioning of the animal hospital.
- Entering medical records on treatments and animal care tasks performed.
75% Assists with the daily care of animals at the Veterinary Health Center as needed, including:
- Preparing diets for hospitalized/quarantined animals.
- Ensuring animal husbandry needs of hospitalized animals are met in the absence of the Veterinary Health Animal Care Specialist, including reporting of daily observations (behavior, abnormalities, death, birth, etc.) to veterinarians
20% Adheres to all continuing education and supervision requirements as outlined in Missouri State RVT statutes. 5%

Must be/able to become a licensed RVT in the state of Missouri. Successful completion of Veterinary Technician National Examination. EXPERIENCE: At least 1-year full-time employment as a licensed registered veterinary technician is desired, ideally in a zoological institution with a diverse taxonomic collection, or a veterinary facility that sees non-domestic animals. Comprehensive knowledge of veterinary procedures and technology, including routine equipment usage and the application of technical skills. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, required and ZIMS software experience preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills. OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Must have valid driver's license. Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test. Must be able to lift 75 pounds, with or without assistance. Assistance depending upon task or role. Must be able to manage stress, endure potentially high risk situations when feeding, transferring, or restraining animals, and make immediate decisions concerning the safety of animals, staff or the public. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening hours, in all weather extremes. Must pass a background and drug screening.
