Job Summary: The Registrar is responsible for the business aspects of the department and the delivery of patient-focused care. This includes registration, insurance verification and notification, updating financial and demographic information, reception duties, and other tasks as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greet and direct patients, visitors, and staff.
- Answer telephones promptly and courteously, direct calls, take messages, and ensure delivery.
- Collect and distribute patient referral information from affiliated physicians.
- Escort visitors and patients to appropriate areas and provide assistance.
- Promote an environment sensitive to cultural diversity.
- Distribute departmental materials such as the Emergency Department brochure, Health Care Proxy, and Patient Bill of Rights.
- Register patients by updating or entering demographic, financial, and emergency contact information into the computer system.
- Verify demographic information and insurance coverage by interviewing patients or their representatives.
- Generate patient charts and attach pertinent information according to policy.
- Review discharged patient charts for completeness according to policy.
- Process laboratory specimens ensuring proper labeling and identification.
- File charts and retrieve old records.
- Enter data into computerized systems.
- Maintain patient recall files.
- Ensure all papers and forms are appropriately stamped according to policy.
- Log patients into registration sheets and reconcile log books.
- Obtain signatures for consent.
- Make clinic appointments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Shared Duties and Responsibilities Across Department:
- Greet visitors and answer telephones promptly and courteously.
- Escort visitors to appropriate areas and provide information and referrals.
- Answer the Call System and refer to appropriate staff.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and functional environment by removing trash and reporting equipment issues.
- Transport patients on stretchers or wheelchairs as required.
- Assist in interpreting according to current protocols.
Skills:
- 6-9 months of healthcare experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication and collaboration.
- Basic computer and keyboard skills.
- Ability to set priorities, problem solve, use proper judgment in difficult situations, and be flexible.
- Proficient oral and written English language skills.
Education:
- High school graduate or GED
