The Rehabilitation Therapy Technician (RTT), Therapeutic Riding Technician works directly with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a team environment where staff and clinicians collaborate to provide comprehensive care and services. The Therapeutic Riding Technician performs routine habilitative and rehabilitative therapy work in the Therapeutic Riding program. Primary responsibilities include providing direct assistance to individuals for this therapeutic specialty. Assists with services as directed by the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) by implementing treatment plans for therapeutic riding. Accompanies individuals to and from activities and appointments. Performs housekeeping duties in therapeutic activity areas, including the barn and pastures. Oversees the vocational work program at the barn. Coordinates participation in special events such as livestock shows and rodeos and the Special Olympics. Works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs):
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy, and performs other duties as assigned.
Prepares materials for assessments based on prior assessments and assists in conducting assessments as directed. Assists in completing assessments and response to interventions, as instructed.
Accompanies individuals to and from activities and appointments, ensuring safety and proper level of supervision in accordance with the individual's plan.
Oversees the vocational work program at the barn.
Coordinates, with supervisory assistance, the SSLC's participation in special events and activities such as the annual Special Olympics and Livestock Fair and Rodeo.
Prepares materials for therapeutic activities and maintains an adequate supply of materials.
Performs housekeeping duties in therapeutic activity areas as instructed, such as barn management and animal care.
Provides assistance to individuals for the therapeutic riding program through hands-on methods, such as during equine-assistance activities.
Performs direct contact observations and completes observation notes.
Collects data related to treatment plans as instructed.
Provides feedback to the interdisciplinary team about the individual's progress, works with Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to maintain a connection, and assists with the development of treatment plans for the assigned discipline.
Provides treatment goals that are feasible for the team to implement that are also in the best interest of the individual.
Maintains current skills in relation to assigned responsibilities.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Ability to clean and manage the barn/stable and pasture areas.
Knowledge of the care and treatment or horses.
Some knowledge, or ability to gain knowledge, of relevant therapeutic techniques.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Experience in the use of equipment, tools, and materials used in therapeutic riding activities.
Ability in written and oral communication.
Ability to assist in development of treatment and support plans.
Ability to collect data collection for therapeutic riding.
Ability to utilize personal computers and relevant software.
General knowledge of, or ability to gain knowledge of, ICF-IID regulations and state supported living center policies and procedures.
Ability to meet the same physical requirements as those for direct contact staff positions.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:
Must possess valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Screening Criteria:
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience working or volunteering with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or in performing therapeutic work.
Work experience in aiding therapists in a physical therapy setting or therapeutic riding center/horse barn therapy is preferred.
Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to Random drug testing.
Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
