The Reinsurance Claims Lead is a key contributor to the reinsurance team at AXIS.
Working in a globalized customer focused, professional reinsurance claims organization, you will supports the department goals of managing, maintaining and retaining a department of the highest quality claim professionals who provide best in class internal and external client servicing through efficient and effective claims handling and quality customer service.

What will you do in this role?
As a Lead Reinsurance Claims professional you will:
Manage a diverse and interesting portfolio of reinsurance claims for various lines of business including: Professional Liability, Casualty, Marine and Surety.
Proactively manage claims from notification through closure, investing the necessary level of investigation required for each claim, depending on the nature and value of it.
Review larger and more complex claims against the governing reinsurance treaty to determine the nature of loss, coverage, and identify when payment is due.
Serve as a resource to other claim professionals and team members at AXIS Re on technical matters, coverage analysis, emerging trends, and other claims related matters.
Participate in professional associations/professional development activities to gain expertise, industry information and insights, and to network.
Autonomously negotiate and resolve claims directly with cedents or brokers.
Triage your work and collaborate with other team members, including technical accounting to facilitate the payment of valid claims accurately and promptly
Conduct claim audits for assigned accounts and clients.
May travel to meet with cedents and brokers for audits and claims discussions from time to time.
Collaborate with AXIS Re colleagues in underwriting, account management, and actuarial by sharing pertinent loss development and trend development information in a timely manner.
Build strategic relationships in the industry to support best in class reinsurance claims handling.
Interact with colleagues across the organization to support strategic initiatives.
Identify developing trends and anomalies in the assigned book of claims and recommend appropriate strategies which could include: changes to procedures, cost containment strategies, client education presentations, etc.
Identify process improvements to be reviewed and approved by more senior management.
Engage in department wide initiatives, discussions and prepare presentations for clients or colleagues from time to time

What you need to have:
A firm understanding of insurance and reinsurance terminology, including familiarity with various lines of business insurance coverage and reinsurance treaty types.
The ability to independently evaluate complex insurance claim exposures for proper reserving under a reinsurance program.
An understanding of common reinsurance contract terms and conditions, including business covered, common exclusions, aggregate limits, occurrence limits, treaty limits, retentions, how to apply annual aggregate deductibles, clash exposures, claims made cover, etc. and the impact of the contract terms to each claim and to the account as a whole
Working knowledge of legal processes and laws applicable to the various lines of business handled in the unit. Ability to recognize potential legal issues or conflicts in differing jurisdictions.
Basic knowledge of how to investigate a reinsurance claim and where to gain more information as needed. Understanding of the basics of the insurance arbitration/ mediation process and structured settlements
An awareness of emerging risks, market conditions and other movements that may materially impact a line of business or an account; broad knowledge base of specific information relating to all business underwritten in the supported business unit
Ability to assess the reliability, credibility and overall completeness of the claims information provided and analyse claims (liability, damages, and reserves). Ability to integrate both the abstract and concrete elements of a claim for a proper evaluation. Acts as a strategic thinker.
Experience working at an insurance carrier, reinsurance broker or reinsurer
A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
What we prefer you to have:
A law degree
Experience in insurance or reinsurance contract interpretation and dispute management.
Prior experience as a reinsurance claims analyst.
Role Factors:
In this role, you will typically be required to:
Travel to cedents and broker meetings in North America between 2-10 times a year
Be in the office 3 days per week
What we offer:
For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $150,000 to $185,000 USD (NY), Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.
