Research Administrator I Job no: 993596 Work type: Support Staff Pay Grade: 11 Major Administrative Unit / College: College Of Engineering Department: Engineering Research Division Of 10016262 Sub Area: AP- Professionals Salary: Salary Commensurate with Experience Location: East Lansing Categories: Administrative/Business/Professional, Engineers/Architects, Financial/Accounting, Research/Scientific, Administrative Professionals- AP, Full Time (90-100%), Union, Remote-Friendly Position Summary Serves as a resource for the College of Engineering for research proposals and budgets; assists in all aspects of the preparation of internally and externally funded research projects; works with Office of Sponsored Programs and Contracts and Grants Administration to carry out aspects of research proposal preparation and submission, revision and awards; works with other universities, federal and state governments, foundations, and industries; reviews solicitations and develops grant budgets; reviews proposals to ensure compliance with sponsoring agency regulations and University policies and procedures; develops and coordinates multiple projects with extensive interactions with internal colleges/units and external entities; some post-award accounting support; performs other administrative duties as assigned. Position includes the opportunity for hybrid/remote work. Minimum Requirements Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business Administration, Finance, or a research-related field; experience with word processing, accounting, and spreadsheet software; experience with federal, state, or industry grants, including developing complex budgets; grant management; experience with electronic grant submission processes such as NSF Fastlane or Grants.gov; experience reviewing solicitations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job also requires completing Essentials of Research Administration at MSU certificate series or equivalent within one year of hire. Desired Qualifications Must possess exemplary customer service skills, including communication, customer focus, building relationships, building trust, impact, adaptability, ability to handle stress, critical thinking, problem-solving, and focus on process improvement. One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research administration. Experience in developing budgets and related documents for research proposals, administering federal agency policies, and research administration, ideally in an academic environment; experience in budget development, management, revolving accounts, and financial analysis; extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access software; self-starter whose strengths include problem solving, teamwork, and ability to work on several projects simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment; experience in administration of grants and contracts and reviewing agency solicitations; experience in preparation of complex research budgets with multiple investigators and tasks; completion of Essentials of Research Administration certificate series or Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification within one year of hire; experience with student payroll; knowledge of MSU policies and procedures; excellent communication skills and ability to work well with faculty and staff in a service-oriented unit.
