Research Assistant - Biological Sciences

**GENERAL DUTIES**

Supports research projects and activities in connection with CUNY programs

- May assist faculty research groups by configuring and testing equipment, collecting and organizing data, and preparing documentation.

- Performs direct research tasks under supervision.

- May develop or utilize computer-based systems to collect and analyze data.

- May assist in preparing reports of research findings.

**CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION**

Reporting to the department chair, the ACF Research Assistant will support the Department of Biological Sciences/ Animal Care Facility

(ACF), with 25 hrs/ week.

ACF duties will include, but are not limited to, taking care of the animals, communicating with faculty researchers on their animal projects,

being responsible for maintaining the facility and records in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; submitting the necessary

paperwork for this compliance and being available for site visits, and communicating with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

(IACUC) committee.

1. Manages the operational activities of the Lehman College ACF by training and monitoring faculty, students, and staff in the appropriate

care, handling, and use of animals, maintaining formal, regular communication with all departments and faculty engaged in animal research,

engaging in hands-on involvement in procedures and in routine animal husbandry activities, and maintaining accurate records on animal

health and animal usage.

2. Ensures the humane, responsible, and scientifically or instructionally sound use of animals in the ACF by maintaining current

knowledge of laboratory animal science as well as regulations and standards affecting the use of animals in research and education,

ensuring that the care of animals and condition of facility environment are in compliance with federal regulations, and conducting regular

inspections of animal care and use facilities.

3. In coordination with the IACUC, develops and implements institutional animal care and use policies, programs, and standard operating

procedures to comply with regulations and nationally accepted standards such as the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

4. Advises the Lehman College administration on budgetary matters affecting the animal research facilities.

5. Prepares reports to governmental agencies in compliance with regulations and policies, in collaboration with the President's Office.

6. Pre-reviews submissions to the IACUC and conducts post-approved monitoring of research protocols.

7. Advises the IACUC regarding potential issues affecting the use of animals in research and education.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience relevant to the research being performed.

**OTHER QUALIFICATIONS**

A Bachelor's degree in a biological or animal science or a related field. At least two years of experience in animal care and facilities, with at

least one year of experience at an animal care facility, is required.

Experience with the care of rodents, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and agricultural animals is required.

Experience in laboratory animal facilities management is required.

At least one year of conducting scientific research is required.

Skills: Knowledge of regulations and national standards relating to the care and use of animals in research and education, issues pertaining to the care and use of animals in research and education, IACUC responsibilities and procedures, and the role and value of animal use in biological research; Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and teaching skills;

The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds; An understanding of accounting and budget preparation; An understanding of databases in order to access records is preferred.

Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending

professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the IACUC director.

**COMPENSATION**

$58,321
