Research Assistant for Beauty Documentary

The New School

Location: New York,NY, USA

Date: 2024-07-01T05:51:04Z

Job Description:

The Research Assistant will be a desk researcher for a documentary on beauty and its toxic tropes. The goal of the film is not to solve beauty but to investigate all the negotiations that human beings need to have in order to be liked.

In our documentary, we would like to investigate the meaning behind the cultural relevance of beauty as one of the most primitive, and powerful, cues to regulate human interactions. Beauty can define layers of meaning, but it has seldom been investigated as a source of meaning and purpose.

The RA will investigate the existing academic literature on beauty, as in neuroaesthetics, semiotics, sociology, anthropology, media theory, etc etc. In addition, we would like to compile a review of all documentary and feature films revolving around similar themes. The final deliverable will be a power point presentation summarizing all findings from the literature review as well as a folder containing all sourced material and relevant links. A background in gender studies, anthropology, media studies or journalism is a plus.
