The Department of Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a new Research Assistant Professor position. This appointment will work closely with the Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory on addressing water research challenges responsive to 21st-century societal needs. The Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory has established a robust network of partners across the Ohio River basin and beyond including NGOs, and state and federal agency partners. The successful candidate will tap into this network and build a research program that either complements existing water expertise or brings new interdisciplinary perspectives and expertise to the Collaboratory (e.g. water equity, water in a changing climate).

As a faculty member in the Water Collaboratory, you will develop community-engaged research projects that address existing knowledge gaps and are responsive to societal challenges. In particular, we seek candidates interested in collaborative grant writing, team science, mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, community engagement, and knowledge co-production. Excellence in science communication and translation is a requirement for the successful applicant. This a 3-year term appointment that is renewable upon budgetary approval and is in the non-tenured, appointment stream with promotion potential. The preferred start date is June 1, 2025, but it is negotiable and the position will remain open until filled.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Develop a socially relevant water research program

2. Lead efforts to co-produce research agendas, proposals, and projects with Water Collaboratory network partners, Collaboratory faculty, and students.

3. Co-advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students

4. Develop an external funding portfolio including leading proposal development as a principal investigator

5. Publish research outcomes in the peer-reviewed literature. Translate findings into publicly accessible science communication briefs or other written materials.

6. Participate in the leadership team of the Water Collaboratory and contribute to strategic planning and day-to-day operations.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. This role is designated as onsite and requires incumbents to report to work at the University of Pittsburgh.

The successful candidate will:

* Contribute to the Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory communications including writing publicly accessible communications about important topics.

* Assist with or lead in proposal preparation. Must be able to formulate and design studies, and interpret complex data for peer-reviewed publications and for non-technical audiences.

* Be highly motivated and possess excellent organizational, teamwork, and communication skills.

* Have excellent interpersonal and management skills. Must be able to mentor graduate and undergraduate students conducting independent research.

Minimum qualifications for Research Assistant Professor include:

* PhD in hydrology, environmental science, or related discipline

* A track record of peer-reviewed publications in water-related sciences or related disciplines appropriate to the career stage/professional history.
