Research Assistant - RI Lab Mouse Colony FlaniganRequisition ID2024-51044CategoryResearchOverviewThe Research Assistant I position for management of mouse colony is available in the Flanigan Lab in the Center for Gene Therapy, Nationwide Children's Hospital. The role supports the overall project goal of high-throughput evaluation of mouse models of human diseases. The Research Assistant will provide skilled care and husbandry of laboratory animals and perform various experimental mouse procedures and complete data entry into a research database. A Place to Be Proud.ResponsibilitiesJob DutiesPerforms animal husbandry assignments that include mating, weaning, and colony maintenanceEnters colony and genotyping data in Microsoft Excel and mouse colony management softwareAssists with the organization of animal housing and research areasRecognizes and addresses animal health and welfare concernsRecords data and compiles summary reportsInteracts regularly with the laboratory team and reports to others within this larger groupLeads weekly meetings with other team members regarding changes, updates, and needs of the mouse colonyPlans, organizes, and reserves animals for studiesCreates and maintains forms and other documentation tools for animal studiesInvolvement and assistance with animal procedures such as: o Genotyping animals o Weighing animals o Injections o Necropsies o Blood and tissue collectionDiligent and timely transport of study animals between vivarium and labUtilizes a set of best practices for documentation of IND-enabling studiesAssistance with other daily functions of the laboratory as necessaryQualificationsMinimum QualificationsAssociate degree in a basic science or related field.One year of relevant experience.Experience in mouse handling.Experience with computer data.Proficient in Microsoft applications (i.e., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)Effective written and oral communication skills.Able to demonstrate a history of excellent workplace attendance and meticulous work, highly motivated and detail oriented. Preferred QualificationsAbility to create and design innovative and strategic solutions for the management of the colony.Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the ALAT levelFamiliar with SoftMouse applicationKnowledge of GLP and FDA regulations.The above list of duties is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this classification.
