Job Description:

The Link Lab within the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at UVA is seeking highly qualified applicants for a Research Engineer position. FOCUS: This candidate will support research efforts in the Smart Infrastructure Grand Challenge effort at UVA. This role will focus on building networking, database, visualization, and sensing technology for applications in smart civil infrastructure systems. This will provide the foundation to support multiple research projects within UVA SEAS related to the broader theme of Smart Communities. Responsibilities include:

  • Building structured data schemas for indoor and outdoor sensor data.
  • Creating HTTP-based frontends and backends in Django, HTML, and CSS to query and visualize smart cities data.
  • Developing user-specific profiles and authenticated logins to access individuals' data.
  • Implementing cross-system data connections between InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server databases, MQTT and HTTP REST data sources, and Grafana visualization tools.
  • Instantiating and maintaining wireless gateways and networks, including LoRAWAN, CBRS and BLE networks.
  • Writing, debugging, and maintaining smart cities applications written in Python and SPARQL.
  • Working with relevant stakeholders to define infrastructure needs and priorities.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Hold a bachelor's degree in a technical field or 4+ years of equivalent experience.
  • Possess excellent technical, programming, and system building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • US citizenship or permanent residency is preferred. However, visa sponsorship may be available for an exceptionally qualified candidate.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Hold a master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent disciplines by the start date.
  • Experience working with message passing pipelines (e.g., Kafka).
  • Experience with common database formats (e.g., tabular, document, and columnar),
  • Experience with web based authentication and authorization (e.g., OAuth, bearer tokens, JWT, and public-key cryptography).
  • Know the difference between transport layer protocols like TCP and application layer protocols like HTTP and MQTT.
  • Experience with designing REST APIs for web-based microservices (experience with Swagger a plus).
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
This position is in Charlottesville, VA with negotiable amounts of remote work. This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. Anticipated salary $80,000-$90,000 commensurate with education and experience. This is an Exempt level, benefited position.
