  • Develops technical solutions and software and tests equipment and software under the projects of the Technology Access Program; and conducts experimentation with new and emerging technologies to determine both barriers and opportunities presented by these technologies in relation to deaf and hard of hearing people.
  • Supports research grant principal investigators with engineering and software development; contributes to engagement with researchers, industry, consumers and policymakers on research findings and accessible technologies; and coordinates with GTS on computer support to the program and may supervise others including students.
  • Suggests areas of study for grant proposal development, implements and pilots innovative technical solutions in preparation for grant proposals, and contributes to grant proposal preparation.
  • Serves as a project lead or project investigator on grant-funded projects pertaining to communications and other access technologies, with an engineering focus.
  • Engages in software development to support ongoing research and product development activities, including product development, maintenance, experimental testing protocols, and data analysis; applies contemporary best practices from software development; maintains a focus on production-quality code that can be later reused or prepared for technology transfer; and keeps up to date with emerging trends in software development, programming languages, and developer tools.
  • Carries out technology tests in support of the goals of the program; and summarizes test results in written reports.
  • Acquires and evaluates cutting edge technologies that are central to the interests of deaf and hard of hearing people in maximizing their communication choices and access to information.
  • Supports communication of specific findings related to accessibility to the Gallaudet community, the research community, research and development personnel in corporations worldwide, as well as to industry groups and consumers; and advocates and negotiates change to design to make products more accessible to people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Supports the program with technical advice, assessments and findings that lets personnel make contributions to industry forums, technical standards groups, and policymakers, in relation to the accessibility of technologies.
  • Plans equipment needs and acquisitions of cutting-edge technologies with the Director.
  • Liaises with GTS on the acquisition, installation, inventory, and maintenance of all computing equipment and software under the program.
  • Administers local and cloud-based computing resources and related equipment that are operated by the program; and liaises with GTS on operational and security considerations of these resources.
  • Supervises student workers that are hired by the program; and assists in mentoring students who are engaging in internships within the program and on grants that the program participates in.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of four years of professional experience with software development, data analysis, or a related field.
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of computing and IP-based telecommunications hardware, software, and network technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of visually oriented technologies used by deaf people.
  • Demonstrated experience with Web-based technologies (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, WebRTC, Node.js or related).
  • Demonstrated experience with emerging technologies, including augmented, virtual and mixed reality
  • Demonstrated experience with a user-facing programming language and developer environment (e.g. Swift and Apple's user interface frameworks).
  • Demonstrated experience with an artificial intelligence framework and data-oriented programming language (e.g. Python and its AI libraries)
  • Demonstrated experience using collaborative development approaches with version control (e.g. GitHub).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
