JOB SUMMARYUnder administrative supervision, assumes supervisory responsibility for production activities in a diversified research/clinical laboratory setting. Provides direct supervision and guidance to assigned personnel. This position is in the J. Mark Cline Laboratory in Comparative Medicine.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree in Biological or Physical Science with four years of related clinical/research experience; Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, ASCP registered, and three years laboratory experience; or Master's degree in Biology or Physical Science with two years laboratory experience required.One-year supervisory experience in laboratory setting applicable to the position.Advanced training in specialized techniques and basic research activities involving particulars of the laboratory to be served. KEY RESPONSIBILITIESThe successful applicant will be able to perform the tasks below; however, delegation and supervision of the team will be expected.Personnel Supervision Work with clinical research veterinarian to maintain lab schedule.Oversee and assign staff to Routine Tasks (see below for specific examples).Manage on-call practices for freezers.Coordinate with Supervisor and dept Business Admin on effort distribution, promotions, raises for lab team.Annual and semi-annual check-ins.Annual reviews, setting expectations, development and execution of corrective plans and other personnel actions as needed.Oversight of Personal Time Off for technical staff.Healthstream training and other required activities.Ad hoc meetings to address specific issues.Distribution of information re: payroll, benefits, HR.Oversee staff travel/expenses (Concur). Data Management Work with lab Resource Manager and Comparative Medicine Data Services Unit to ensure rigorous and consistent data collection and storage. Standard Operating Procedures Maintain/Update SOPs with team. Animal Resources Program Interactions Animal Transfer forms.Animal Order forms.Track/update sources of per diem support. Routine Tasks Management of routine purchases and bills.Track and manage lab charts of account.Laundry (K Bowers), order scrubs.IDEXX Clinical Pathology payments (Core Connect).Buy NHP enrichment (Amazon or local).Dry Ice (pick up, coordinate).Gases (LN2, O2), coordinate with Necropsy and ARP for efficiency, Linde.Tissue Culture CVVL Core supply/reagent ordering.Freezer Management - Emergency call list, maintenance, planned thaws.iLab Requests - enter and track in Excel (Histology, imaging, sequencing, other).Shipping of research samples (Tissue Sharing Biohazard Form, Train/manage staff, confirm courier and IDEXX transfers are timely). Maintenance Contracts Manage ongoing contracts (e.g. Printmate and Slidemate labeling machines). Health and Safety Environmental Health and Safety waste account.Radiation Safety/badges.Vaporizer certification.Hood certification. Regulatory Approvals Track/Assist with CDC, FWS, CITES paperwork.Supervise Drug Inventory Process.Regular inventory, drug box access, DEA disposal. Lab Inspections - guide team Environmental Health and Safety.IACUC. Necropsy Scheduling with necropsy technician, request form.Preparation of labels.Assisting with necropsies.Tissue preparation for histopathology.Maintain and organize tissue storage. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed, reviewing typical work situations and handling procedural or technical laboratory problems.Prepares technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results.Coordinates the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress and/or adverse trends.Performs a variety of complex and independent activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation and interpretation of laboratory data.Coordinates and participates in specialized laboratory procedures requiring advanced skill and theoretical knowledge.Instructs other personnel in laboratory methods and procedures.Reviews newly developed testing methods and procedures, refines procedures for laboratory application, sets up laboratory equipment, and standardizes laboratory solutions and reagents.Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein. SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.Ability to operate laboratory equipment.Knowledge of the maintenance of routine records and reports.Ability to learn elementary laboratory techniques and safety precautions.
