Experience related to the dairy industry, animal science, and/or animal husbandry.

Experience related to anthropology and/or qualitative social science research.

Job Description:

Summary

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventative Medicine (VMPM) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, Research Scientist III position.

This position is specifically designed to provide research support for a recently awarded USDA Sustainable Agricultural Systems grant related to the sustainability of dairy goat production in the United States. Responsibilities of this position include leading research activities in the funded grant related to supporting rural community development and strengthening the workforce related to dairy goat production systems. Additional responsibilities include overseeing completion of animal health research related to respiratory disease, failure of passive transfer, mastitis, and antimicrobial stewardship in dairy goat production systems. The successful candidate will have a unique focus complementary to the department's mission in current research interests as stated above. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship. Example of Duties- Develops, designs and conducts one or more complex research projects of high complexity, reviews progress and evaluates results.- Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques.- Acts as a co-author and may act as a principal investigator.- Recommends program direction.- Trains users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes.- Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data.- Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis.- May supervise a small work group.Level Guidelines- Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU's mission and department or work unit goals- Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude- Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action- Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices- Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff- May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)- May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist- Provides guidance to students

The VMPM department has a three-tiered mission of teaching, research and service, and is addressed by a highly-productive faculty, energetic graduate students, and the additional expertise of adjunct faculty. Our research is applied to improvement of animal health, public health and food safety. Our faculty have instructional responsibilities for bacteriology, immunology, virology, microbiology, epidemiology and public health.
