Job Overview

The Research Technician position in the Department of Biology provides skilled capabilities to support the scope of teaching laboratory and research-related functions in the Department of Biology. The Research Technician provides technical lab support by performing complex laboratory and research related tasks and acts as a specialist on laboratory or other research methods and equipment functions. The research technician performs a variety of functions that require a high degree of proficiency through troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions. The Research Technician may help instruct a laboratory academic section in research techniques, instruments, methods, and procedures. The position will be hired for a one year, renewable term.

Work Interactions

Working with the faculty within the Department of Biology, the daily duties include preparation of complex reagents required for teaching laboratories, oversee procurement and maintenance of laboratory equipment in research and teaching laboratories, procurement and tracking of required reagents and other materials, review and documentation of safety and other protocols. This position oversees the use and maintenance of Biology teaching labs, coordinating with multiple faculty. Serves as liaison with EHS, GU facilities and external agencies charged with maintenance of research and teaching infrastructure. Th Research Technician reports directly to the Chair of the Biology department, with a dotted reporting line to the Dean's Office designee.

Daily duties include but are not limited to:

* Managing inventory and tracking of all laboratory reagents and equipment

* Procuring reagents and equipment for all labs

* Coordinating the repair and maintenance of Departmental infrastructure, serving as liaison with GU Facilities and external companies charged with technical equipment repair and maintenance

* Monitoring equipment and supply needs of research groups teams and aiding in identifying resources, as needed

* Serving as liaison with EHS, to ensure overall lab safety

Requirements and Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related field.

* 2-3 years related experience required (or equivalent combination of education and work experience).

* Excellent organizational and communication skills and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with investigators.

* Must have the ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgements, ability to work as part of a team and the ability to use a consultative approach to resolve issues in area of responsibility.

* Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint and assisting in the preparation of technical produces and reports.

* Must be able to maintain good record keeping and show ability to learn new techniques.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$18.28 - $27.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
