Position Summary
The Department of Physiology and Biophysics is seeking a candidate to serve as a Research Technician II in the lab of Dr. Sandy Kuhlman. Research focuses on the development and plasticity of the visual system. State-of-the-art microscopy techniques are applied to study brain activity in awake behaving mice. Behavior is monitored using custom-made small electronics. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing surgical techniques including craniotomies. Secondary responsibilities include managing a medium-sized mouse colony, re-ordering stock supplies, and assisting other team members in their research and communication of discoveries. Excellent organizational skills, ability to work well with others, and willingness to learn new lab techniques are key.
Specific duties include:
* Perform research duties (65%)
* Assist and advise researchers, students and technicians as needed (15%)
* Design new procedures in collaboration with researchers (10%)
* Maintain relationships with other departments at the University, such as Laboratory Animal Facilities, Medical Computing, Confocal Microscopy, Instrumentation Center, etc. (5%)
* Complete purchase orders (5%)

Minimum Qualifications
* Associates Degree
* Experience working as part of a team in an academic research laboratory
* Desire and ability to learn new skills quickly
* Computer and/or electronic skills (e.g., Arduino Microcontrollers)
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently
* Willing to work extra hours if needed for animal monitoring or care
Preferred Qualifications
* A Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Neuroscience, Veterinary Science or other health sciences field is preferred
* Research experience in the handling and use of animals and database management is also preferred
* Experience and/or an interest in systems neuroscience and experience in programming using Matlab or Python would also be an advantage
Physical Demands Salary Range $38,000 - $42,000 Additional Salary Information The salary range reflects our good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible compensation at the time of posting, the role and associated responsibilities, and the experience, education, and training of the selected candidate.
