DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The UCNRS (University of California Natural Reserve System) is housed in the UC Office of the President. The UCNRS was established in 1965 and is currently composed of 41 reserves distributed across the State of California. Each UC campus oversees the operations and management of a subset of reserves. The mission of the UCNRS is to contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service in protected natural areas throughout California. They enable monitoring of environment health and provide a baseline for ecosystem restoration in the context of California's rapidly growing population and the changing global environment. These relatively undisturbed samples of the state's natural ecosystems are available to any qualified user from any institution, public or private, throughout the world.

The University of California San Diego Natural Reserve System (NRS) manages four of the forty-one field stations that make up the largest and most diverse set of university-affiliated reserves in the world. The reserves include examples of most major ecosystems in the state. They provide secure sites for research, instruction, and public outreach. They enable monitoring of environmental health and provide a baseline for ecosystem restoration in the context of California's rapidly growing population and the changing global environment.

* Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve

* Dawson Los Monos Reserve

* Elliott Chaparral Reserve

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Reserve Manager will have a key role in developing reserve practices and traditions. The Reserve Manager reports to the UC San Diego NRS Executive Director and is responsible for operations, programs, administration, and further development of the UC San Diego Natural Reserve System.

The incumbent: 1) provides daily management and general oversight of the reserves; 2) designs and implements programs, policies, and procedures; 3) facilitates research and education by university faculty and students; 4) monitors and oversees environmental conditions and sensitive habitats in the reserve and implements adaptive management strategies (e.g., invasive plant removal, rare and threatened plant and animal species surveys); 5) supervises one Staff employee, Student Assistant(s) and volunteers; 6) operates and manages the reserves in accord with the mission, purposes, and policies of the UC Natural Reserve System; 7) coordinates operations and maintenance activities with Facilities Management; 8) enhances research, facilities, and programs through extramural proposals and developmental activities, in coordination with the Executive Director, Faculty Director and others; 9) collaborates and engages, as appropriate, with external partners and stakeholders in support of the reserve and field station; and 10) demonstrates a willingness to assume responsibility readily and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area such as Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, Natural Resource Management and / or equivalent experience / training. Master's degree preferred.

  • Advanced ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.

  • Advanced attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Experience with data organization, compilation and reporting.

  • Advanced communication skills with broad range of research partners and project team members.

  • Advanced ability to lead research activities and project team independently, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

  • Experience with volunteer management, including scheduling, motivating, recruitment and retention.

  • Interest and ability to work effectively with diverse communities, including indigenous groups.

  • Solid knowledge of common computer application programs. Competency in use of typical business software: word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation applications. Adept at learning and utilizing new systems.

  • Advanced knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.

PREFERRED

  • In-depth knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.

  • Advanced knowledge of local ecosystems.

  • Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems and community/citizen science tools.

  • Experience or demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities, including indigenous groups.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check and DMV Check results.

  • A California Driver's License is required for the use of UC vehicles. Incumbent will be required to participate in the DMV Pull Program.

  • Must have access to reliable transportation.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Must be able to travel occasionally.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
