Job Description:

The Resident Assistant ensures the safety and security of residents in a low-income housing project. This role involves monitoring and enforcing rules, responding to minor emergencies, and providing assistance to residents as needed. The Resident Assistant plays a key role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and stable living environment, helping residents maintain housing stability and promoting overall community safety.

Essential Functions:

1. Ensure safe environment for tenants and staff of housing property.

2. Provide assistance to residents as needed, including connecting to case managers, resources, and services.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Support the mission and vision of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan.

2. Perform work in a safe manner by observing all Goodwill safety policies and procedures.

3. Interact with all Goodwill team members, clients, and customers in a professional manner.

4. Respect the diversity of others, including but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities.

5. Regularly patrol the property, common areas, hallways, and perimeter to ensure safety and adherence to policies. Monitor the property and conduct regular safety checks to ensure resident well-being.

6. Provide assistance to residents with daily living challenges and handle minor emergencies such as lockouts, disturbances, and maintenance needs.

7. Enforce building rules and procedures, address noise complaints, monitor guest limitations, and manage overnight guest logs.

8. Serve as a liaison between residents and housing staff, reporting safety or behavioral concerns that require further intervention.

9. Maintain accurate records of resident and visitor activities, track maintenance issues, and support administrative functions as needed.

10. Promote a positive and inclusive living environment that respects and supports residents' diverse backgrounds and needs.

11. Maintain confidentiality and privacy for all residents, adhering to GWNMI housing policies.

12. Maintain positive community relations with neighborhood residents.

13. Participate in staff meetings and training related to housing services and emergency procedures as required.

14. Other duties as assigned by manager.

Reports to: Director of Housing Development

Supervises: None

Education, Licenses, Certifications and Experience:

* High School Diploma or equivalent required.

* Experience working with vulnerable populations or in a similar resident assistant or customer service role preferred.

* First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment).

* Valid Driver's License preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Ability to build trusting relationships with residents of diverse economic, cultural, and functional backgrounds.

2. Creative and motivated approach to solving resident issues, with the ability to adapt to changing needs.

3. Skills in de-escalating conflicts and handling emergency situations calmly and professionally.

4. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to maintain accurate documentation.

5. Excellent customer service orientation, with a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards helping those in need.

6. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a non-judgmental manner.

7. Ability to work as part of a team while also being self-directed in completing assigned tasks.

8. Proficiency in basic computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Office, and Excel.

9. Familiarity with local housing services and other community resources and agencies.

10. Knowledge of and sensitivity to persons with disabilities or who are disadvantaged.

11. Previous experience working with the homeless population or precariously housed is preferred.

12. Open and accepting philosophy relative to homelessness.

Physical Requirements:

1. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs frequently during the workday.

2. May be required to lift up to 20 pounds.

3. Position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to zero tolerance under the Goodwill Northern Michigan Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
