Job Description:
The Resident Team Assistant 1 (RTA1) provides administrative support to Connecticut Children's hospitalized patients cared for by the University of Connecticut pediatric resident physicians and other health care team members, and facilitates hospital services to provide testing, discharge and follow-up. The RTA1 works with medical team to coordinate patient care initiatives that facilitate patient flow. The RTA1 reports to the office of Medical Education.ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT: Collaborates with healthcare team members to expedite work orders from physicians, such as scheduling of inpatient studies (i.e., CAT Scans, X-rays, sleep studies, MRI's, EKGs, EEGs) and facilitating organization of sedation for such tests as needed. Obtains information, studies, and results from outside hospitals and offices for medical team.FAMILY CENTERED ROUNDS: Participates in multidisciplinary patient care rounds daily from Monday through Friday and arranges for all essential Health Care Team members (i.e., Attending physicians, Interpreters, Nurses, Child & Support Services, Respiratory Therapists, and Nutritionist, Discharge Planners, etc.) to be present during rounds to review the patient care plan.HEALTH CARE TEAM COLLABORATION: Acts as liaison to enhance communication between all members of the health care team. Provides services to inpatients on other units or boarding in the Emergency Department. May also participate in data collection for quality improvement measures on the inpatient service.PATIENT FLOW: Aids the resident physicians to facilitate timely discharge.This includes communicating with case management and discharge planner to collect information regarding prescriptions needing prior authorization and obtain signatures from residents on all necessary forms to expedite the patient discharge process. Calls pharmacy to make sure all appropriate follow-up medications are available. Liaisons with case management regarding durable medical equipment needs. Assists patient and families with anticipated discharge date and time and follow-up appointment information. Sets up appointments for patient's follow-up visits and records in the electronic health record.COMPUTER INTEGRATION: RTA1 will help to locate and ensure functionality of the RTA1 and resident team computers on wheels and submit work requests for problems. Will utilize a RTA1 computer on wheels for secure text messaging, updating follow up appointments in the patients' charts and may facilitate information sharing on rounds by pulling up patient medical information for review in real time, i.e, x-rays, results, orders. Provides resident team with a list of patient names, room numbers and nurse's names from patient systems database (i.e., sign-in / sign-out sheet).PATIENT/FAMILY EXPERIENCE: RTA1 works with the health care team to improve the overall patient/family experience. Provides patient/families with evaluation forms to be completed on the resident(s) involved with their care. Assists the families as needed to help get the form completed prior to discharge.Demonstrates knowledge of the population-specific differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and co-workers.Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC STANDARDS.Education:High School diploma or GED requiredExperience:6 months clerical experience required, experience in a health care setting preferred.KNOWLEDGE OF:Basic medical terminology required; competency in unit-specific medical terminology must be demonstrated by end of orientation.Basic math and measurementsSKILLS:Excellent interpersonal and communication skillsBeginner to intermediate skills in Microsoft Windows operating system, Beginner to Intermediate word processing (Microsoft Word) and data entry skills.Experience using and Beginner to Intermediate skills in patient scheduling and/or patient records software such as SMS is preferred.Medication transcription skills preferred.Skill in use of operating basic office equipment (e.g. copier, fax, calculator, multi-function telephone)ABILITY TO:Effectively communicate both orally and in writing in English demonstrating a command of basic grammar and spelling is required.Understand and follow specific written and verbal instructions and procedures.Maintain confidentiality of records and information.Organize and manage tasks and activities on daily basis.Work efficiently and with accuracy within a fast-paced environment.Learn and follow established protocols in order to initiate appropriate action in emergency/crisis situations.Learn and demonstrate competency in data entry/data retrieval in electronic patient records and/or patient supply systems utilized on unit.Interact effectively with all patients/families, and members of the health care team. Focus on customer needs and follow through to meet needs.Work Environment:The RTA1 will work in a combination clinical and non-clinical work environment at the main hospital campus.
