Location Description:

The iconic Arizona Biltmore is located in the heart of the prestigious Biltmore neighborhood in Phoenix. The resort was named the Jewel of the Desert since its opening on February 23, 1929. This gorgeous 39-acre property reopened in May 2021 after undergoing a $150 million restoration and has over 700 rooms, over 200,000 square feet in banquet space, and 8 food and beverage outlets (including 2 restaurants, 2 bars, 2 poolside bars, a gelato shop/caf, and in-room dining).

Overview:

This is a paid apprenticeship program in partnership with Grand Canyon University and you must be currently enrolled in the school with Hospitality Management as a major or minor. The program is 20 hours per week for 10-weeks and will include working weekends and holidays.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Integrate theory, practice, and skills developed during coursework at GCU to complete the responsibilities assigned as part of the apprenticeship.
  • Gain exposure to multiple operational departments within the food and beverage division of a resort to understand the performance expectations in each of those areas.
  • Undertake all tasks set with confidence and to the standards required by the resort.
  • Exhibit professional behavior necessary for the job responsibilities assigned.
  • Demonstrate confident and effective communication skills specific to each department.
  • Exhibit teamwork in a professional setting.

As an apprentice, you will build upon your classroom studies through the Resort Food and Beverage Apprentice Program, learning first-hand about the resort's food and beverage operations with a focus on banquets and be introduced to the resort brand and culture. By gaining hands-on experience, you will be better prepared to pursue opportunities post-graduation. The apprentice will learn and gain experience in the banquets department by rotating through the following positions: Barback, Server, Bartender, Captain, Setup, and Steward.

  • Execute duties at a high standard meeting LXR, Arizona Biltmore, and Forbes service standards.
  • As a Barback, support Banquet Bartenders and Captains in their preparation, service, and breakdown of banquet bars and other beverage service associated with banquet functions.
  • As a Server, deliver and serve food and beverage items in a friendly, courteous and timely manner resulting in guest satisfaction.
  • As a Bartender, serve beverages and/or food to the guests in a friendly, courteous and timely and manner, resulting in guest satisfaction.
  • As a Captain, oversee set-up, service, and clean-up for all banquet functions.
  • As a Setup Attendant, safely and correctly clean, organize and setup all convention service function space as well as breakdown and store all equipment in designated areas.
  • As a Steward, collect all serviceware and allocate in accordance with banquet event order (BEO) to supply the function and remove all serviceware following the event to ensure proper clean up.
  • Complete a project as assigned by your Manager.
  • Attend regular meetings with your Manager / Mentor.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.
Qualifications:
  • Enrolled at Grand Canyon University (GCU) as either a Hospitality Management major or minor
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior level
  • Prior food and beverage experience, preferred
  • Food Handlers Card
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language to communicate effectively with guests and employees.
  • Interpersonal skills to provide overall guest satisfaction.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with stressful situations during busy periods.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situation.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
