Job Description:

Energy Recruiters has been retained to help identify an exceptional Retail Executive who will lead the development of a sustainable, profitable, and scalable convenience retail offering. The Retail Business Leader is a strategic leadership role responsible for delivering performance, seamless operation, and profitability.

Our Client, a diversified, energy-focused enterprise based in Washington, is excited to continue developing and expanding their offering into new communities. Over the course of 70 years and over 10 acquisitions, this progressive organization now serves their consumer and business communities with convenience retail, commercial & bulk fuels, renewable products, dealer service, lubricant distribution, transportation services, cardlock, and more.

In this role, you will drive safety, financial, people and operational excellence; build brand equity, loyalty and advocacy; ensure alignment with company goals, our Mission, Vision, Core Values and People Vision; and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement through Leadership, Management and Accountability. You will also serve in close collaboration and partnership with other senior and key leaders towards the best possible big team wins and to secure the long-term viability of the enterprise.

Leadership Expectations

  • Vision and Strategy: Develop and implement retail strategies that align with the company's vision and goals, driving culture, growth, and profitability. Ensure all team members understand the company's long-term vision.
  • Team Development: Inspire, mentor, coach and lead a diverse team of operational professionals, promoting a high-performance culture. Oversee the consistent implementation of regular training and development opportunities to enhance team skills, career growth, engagement and retention.
  • Communication: Facilitate clear, consistent communication across all levels of the Retail Business Team to ensure alignment and engagement.
  • Change Management: Lead and manage change initiatives within retail operations, ensuring smooth transitions and minimal disruption. Communicate the benefits of changes clearly and help directors and managers effectively lead their team members in adapting to new processes and systems.

  • Management Expectations

  • Safe Work Environment: Create, foster and enhance a safe work environment for team members, customers, and vendors. Ensure all retail operations comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and company policies.
  • Operational Excellence: Evaluate, design and implement goals, budgets and projects that profitably grow net income and increase brand equity. Ensure the optimization and consistent implementation of effective policies, processes and standards. Enhance the customer experience through excellence in customer service, effective merchandising and promotions, and store layout.
  • Brand Equity: Work closely with Marketing to ensure high brand execution and strong brand equity. Obtain, analyze and develop plans from a wide variety of applicable analytics and industry resources.
  • Performance Monitoring: Bring focus and inspire the Team to row in the same direction. Develop, review and improve upon leading key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive the goals and vision. Regularly review store performance data and provide actionable insights.
  • Resource Allocation: Optimize the allocation of resources, including staffing, inventory, vendor relationships and budgets. Ensure that resources are used effectively to meet business goals.
  • Budget Management: Develop, manage, and oversee the retail operations budget. Monitor financial performance and quickly make adjustments as necessary to meet and exceed financial targets.
  • Capital Expenditures: Participates in the Long-term CapEx planning to ensure goals, budgets, projects and vision are realized.
  • Technology Integration: Ensure the effective use of technology in retail operations. Oversee the implementation and use of retail management software and other tools to enhance efficiency.
  • Vendor Management: Build and maintain strong, strategically mutual relationships with suppliers and vendors. Oversee negotiation of contracts and ensure the timely delivery of quality products.
  • Risk Management: Develop and lead risk management/mitigation consistent with organizational goals.
  • Accountability

  • Big Team: Collaborate with enterprise's Senior Leadership Team to develop and meet company strategies and goals. Frequently collaborate with other senior leaders across the organization to build trust and transparency. Share processes and key learnings from all parts of the business. Improve speed to results by building relationships/partnerships built on trust, mutual respect and accountability.
  • Goal Setting: Establish and communicate thoughtful and collaborative goals, designed using input from all applicable stakeholders, that are clear, measurable, and aligned with broader company objectives. Ensure that all team members understand their goals and how they contribute to the company's success.
  • People Operations: Oversee implementation of regular 121's and quarterly conversations to drive right person/right seat, retention, engagement, development and support. Use performance data to recognize achievement and identify areas for improvement.
  • Issue Resolution: Address and resolve operational challenges effectively and promptly. Encourage open discussion of issues and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement. Encourage team members to identify areas for improvement and implement changes that enhance efficiency, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
  • Reporting: Prepare and present regular reports to Executive Leadership and Senior Leadership Teams on progress towards plans, insights and recommendations based on data analysis.

Strong AI knowledge and Business intelligence. Proven ability to quickly scale an operation, including sale and acquisition of property, assets and businesses. Superior knowledge of industry regulations and operational guidelines. Demonstrated accountability and successful implementation of strategies, goals, and initiatives. Expert in business plan development. Excellent knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in related operations and retail supply chain management. Proven ability to develop innovative, simple solutions. Superior negotiation skills in both internal and external settings. Proven ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing environment; agile, flexible, and resilient. Proven ability to manage performance and drive business improvement. Ability to travel as needed.
  • Minimum Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in business administration or related field, and 10-15 years' experience in retail and/or operational customer facing roles, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Significant executive level experience in a complex, fast-paced for-profit organization.
    • Leadership experience in Retail Operations.
    • Strong working knowledge of industry regulations and legislative guidelines including food and environmental safety.

    Preferred Education and Experience

    • Previous Executive Retail Convenience Operational and Team Leadership, Retail Marketing and Merchandising experience.
    • 15 years' experience with 10 years in an executive level position.
    • Master's degree in business administration or other related degree.
